The Best and Worst Games of All Time

Some of the best and worst computer and console games, based on the critics' opinions and my own.

For many people out there, video games are an essential part of their lifes. They can show how far technology can go, or they can be a failed attempt to earn money; they can be done with dedication, making gaming almost an art, or they can be rushed and pushed to earn some easy bucks. This list explores both cases: the greatest games -masterpieces of their consoles- and the worst games -a shame for the industry-.

The Best:

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Almost unanimously praised as one of the best (if not THE best) games of the history, this classic Zelda game for the N64 -the first of its franchise on 3D- shows how good games can be. It had a convincing storyline and a great gameplay; the temples and dungeons will be remembered forever by those who played them. If you haven't played this game, you MUST. You may stay awake all night just playing.
  2. God of War

Unforgettable, action packed game for the PS2. Its story will amaze you, its graphics will surprise you and you will not be able to stop playing it. Don't listen what they say - this is NOT button mashing. In order to win, you will need to be smart, solve puzzles and use combos to defeat your enemies. Another MUST. If you haven't played it, try it once and you won't be able to leave it!
  3. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings

Probably the best real-time strategy game of the industry for the PC. It is not just a game of war; you will enjoy building up your city, consolidating an economy and if you are playing online, making allies (if you have enough time before one of them launches his attack!). Also, the scen editor is amazing, and there are many TRULY AMAZING campaigns downloadable from many sites, like heavengames. Even now, in the year 2008, many people keep playing this 10 years old game. And believe me, download one of the top-rated campaigns form heavengames, and you whole concept of this game will change... and you will be adicted to it for years again. Another MUST for the avid gamer; I doubt that any gamer has not heard of this game.

There are many other great games that I won't describe in detail now just to not get boring, but they deserve to be mentioned. Any gamer must have, at least, heard of: Halo 2, GTA, Grim Fandango, BioShock, World of Warcraft, EverQuest, Golden Sun (1 and The Lost Age), Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario 64, The Elder's Scroll IV: Oblivion, and others. Don't forget, this is based on my own opinion, and you may disagree with this. Feel free to coment, but don't flame. Now...

The Worst:

  1. Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing

Miserable attempt of a truck race game. Filled with bugs, awful graphics, and stuff like that. Plain pathetic; you can get off the level limits (and your truck will fall to a sort of endless "black hole"), get through walls and objects, the AI doesn't work, no sounds, and then there is that infamous YOU'RE WINNER screen. If you bought this game, no, you are not the winner.
  2. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Flee from the inspector, fall into holes and try to figure out a way to escape... Plain miserable, an attempt of game that Atari created expecting to earn money since christmas was near. The game was a failure, and the company buried the copies... But some people liked it, and that's what I find unbelievable.
  3. Custer's Revenge

Rape the native american girl as fast as you can avoiding arrows... enough said.
  4. Superman 64

NO, just NO. Please, stay away from this. Superman 64 is just about flying throuhg some rings floating in the sky, with awful graphics and a terrible control. You can pass and see through buildings and it is all covered on a dull green fog. the explanation from the company: it's cryptonite that damages Superman... Now THAT is pathetic, a company that justifies its bad design with fictional reasons. Just STAY AWAY FROM IT!

AGAIN: Don't forget, this is based on my opinion, and you may disagree with this. Feel free to coment, but don't flame.
