Combine two fromations can be good idea to get more advantages. 4-1-2-2-1 formation is a combination between 4-5-1 formation and 4-3-3 formation. Just like 4-5-1 formation 4-1-2-2-1 formation have five midfield player. Both winger in this formation also can be functioned as striker so this formation has better offensive capabilities than 4-5-1 formation.
In this article, i will use some terminologies that already explained in previous article entitled "Stone Wall".
Strength Vs weakness
Before we start talk about strength and weakness of 4-1-2-2-1 formation, an overview of this formation will be showed below.

In 4-1-2-2-1 formation, you can choose to use RM and LM or RW and LW, depend on the players in your team.
Strenght: 4-1-2-2-1 formation have very good attack and defense capabilities, and also good in midfield battle. Both winger in this formation also can be functioned as striker.
Weakness:Both of your wingers will play two roles, as a midfielder and as a striker. Because of that, they will spend alot of energy. Enemy counter attack can be very dangerous if we play againts 4-4-2 or 4-1-2-1-2 formation, because in midfield area we will only have three players.

Add a DM is very good idea to strengthen our defence. Using above defending position, we will have at least five men in our red area. Both of our CM will wait for rebound ball in our yellow area, and they will supply the ball to our ST or wingers.

In above attacking position, both of our CM will play role as second striker. Both of our wingers can build an offensive move from the side line. If you have striker with penalty box or holding playing style, set him as a target man and order him to go for set pieces.
Using 4-1-2-2-1 formation We will have two defensive line. Our LB, DM and RB will act as first defensive line. They are responsible to cover enemy yellow area, wait for rebound and intercept enemy counter attack. Using two CD is enough to cover the second defensive line since enemy's strikers usually will stand in front of our first defensive line. If our enemy has fast striker set our CD to mark him all over.
