Tactic Guide 4-4-2

Strenght, weakness, advantages and disadvantages of 4-4-2 formation. Balance in attack and defense.

In this article we will talk about 4-4-2 formation. Stength and weakness of this formation will be examined. Base on our examination, we can decide the best defending and attacking positions to minimize the disadvantages and maximize our advantages.

In this article, i will use some terminologies that already explained in previous article entitled "Stone Wall".

Strength Vs weakness

Before we start talk about strength and weakness of 4-4-2 formation, an overview of this formation will be showed below.

----ST------ST----
------------------
------------------
-LM---CM---CM--RM-
------------------
------------------
-LB---CD---CD--RB-
------------------
--------GK--------

Strength

4-4-2 formation has equal capabilities in defense and offense. Using 4-4-2 formation, we will be able to cover almost the whole field, from box to box. In short, 4-4-2 is the most balance formation among others.

Weakness

By spliting our players equally in every sector of the field, also mean thath all of our players should run more often to reinforce other sector. The biggest disadvantage of 4-4-2 is lay on players energy level. I discover this fact after I compare all formation using Match Tool Analysis (MAT). With 4-4-2 formation our players energy level will decrease faster compare to other formations.

Base on my observations, 4-4-2 formation also need more time to launch a successful counter attack.

Defending and attacking position

Defending position:

------------------
------------------
--------ST--------
--------ST--------
-LM------------RM-
---CM---------CM--
------CD---CD-----
-LB------------RB-
--------GK--------

4-4-2 has very good defensive capabilities. The defending position above is focused more on how to make our counter attack faster. Both of your CM will act as DM. Your LM and RM are responsible to supply the ball to your striker. Put faster ST in front of the other ST.

Attacking position:

LM---ST----ST---RM
------------------
-----CM---CM------
-LB------------RB-
-----CD---CD------
------------------
------------------
------------------
--------GK--------

Using above attacking position you will have at least four men in enemy red area and at least four men in enemy yellow area. Your LB and RB will cover enemy wings and both of your CM will act as second line striker and wait for rebound ball.

Remember, although 4-4-2 formation is veri balance in attack and defense, it doesnt mean that you will always win. Try to learn strengt and weakness of each formation. learn about your enemy formation before the match and assign the best formation to defeat them.
