In this article we will talk about one of defensive football formation the 1-4-3-2 formation. 1-4-3-2 formation can be considered as a defensive form of 3-5-2 formation. This formation has almost the same offensive capabilities with 3-5-2 formation, but has better defensive capabilities than 3-5-2 formation.

In this article, i will use some terminologies that already explained in previous article entitled "Stone Wall".

Strength Vs weakness

Before we start talk about strength and weakness of 1-4-3-2 formation, an overview of this formation will be showed below.

----ST------ST----
------------------
------------------
----CM--CM--CM----
------------------
-LWB----------RWB-
-----CD----CD-----
--------SW--------
--------GK--------

In 1-4-3-2 formation, we replace center CD in 3-5-2 formation with a SW, and replace both RM and LM with RWB and LWB.

Strength:

1-4-3-2 formation have alot of defender, so you will not be worry with your defense. 1-4-3-2 formation also has winger to guard your side line. Both of your LWB and RWB also can help you in attack.

Weakness:

Your winger should run in long distance in order to help your striker, so they will spend alot of energy. Your SW will stand mostly in your penalty box, so be aware of penalty. To prevent making fault in your penalty box, dont choose a hard man as your SW.

Defending and attacking position

Defending position:

------------------
------------------
------------------
-----ST-----ST----
------------------
--CM----------CM--
--------CM--------
-LWB----SW---RWB--
----CD--GK---CD---

In above defending position, you will have at least 5 men in your red area. All of your CM will wait for rebound ball in your yellow area. Using above defending position you can launch a counter attack quickly. Your centre CM can build an offensive move from the centre of the field. And two other CM can build a counter attack from the side line.

Attacking position:

----ST------ST----
----CM------CM----
-LWB----CM----RWB-
----CD------CD----
--------SW--------
------------------
------------------
------------------
--------GK--------

Using above attacking position, you will only have two men in enemy red area. But you will have at least five men in enemy yellow area as second offensive line, this will give you alot of advantage especially when you play pressing style. Choose player with Attack Minded playing style as your LWB and RWB, they will help you alot in order to strengthen your attack.
