First off, I'm Irish, so I'm not going to have any sort of interest in American Football, Baseball, Ice Hockey or Basketball games. They're just not my "style". So if you're looking for reviews of those kind of games, this isn't the place to find them. Secondly, I've been gaming pretty much all my life, be it Pong, Mario and Luigi, Crash Bandicoot, Banjo and Kazooie up until today, with games such as Resistance, Motorstorm, GTA IV among many other games. Today, I've decided to put my effort into writing an article about my favourite sports games for the Playstation 3. Funnily enough, all 3 games are different sports, so hopefully you'll see some objectiveness in this article. Also, the games aren't in any particular order, as comparing sports games across different types of sports can be very difficult.
FIFA 09
At last, a FIFA game that can beat its rival PES (Pro Evolution Soccer for those not in the know). FIFA 08 came close, but that was mainly because PES 2008 was a major letdown. With that having been said, it's very tough to see FIFA getting beaten by PES this time around. FIFA has always had the stronger online (Konami never seem to be able to get any games online right), but they've improved but their online and offline game. The gameplay and physics engine is astounding, the camera angles are great, and all the formulae for ball movement, player runs etc seem to be top notch. The online is better than ever, with 10 vs 10 (Be A Pro) mode an absolute gift to gamers. Hopefully EA will carry through on their promise to improve FIFA 10 as much as FIFA 09 improved over the 08 edition. Here's looking forward to a bright future for FIFA.
Top Spin 3
Top Spin 3 is a tennis game from 2K Sports. While the game does take some time to learn, it is well worth it. While Virtua Tennis 3 is easy to pickup and play, the instant gratification just isn't that great. When you've mastered Top Spin 3, however, you'll suddenly feel like you're in a whole new world of gaming greatness. The only real flaw with this game is that if online is laggy, it's completely unplayable. At times, it will seem like your PS3 has frozen, and seeing as the shots in the game are based on timing, lag of more than a few milliseconds will screw up the gameplay completely.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09
Tiger Woods 09 was a great improvement over the 08 version of the game. The designers at EA were slated over 08 for making it too difficult to use the analog stick swing system, so they made it a lot closer to the old system this time around. They also added a bunch of new courses, as well as revamping the old ones. This coupled with simultaneous online play is a truly great feature. No longer must you wait 4 times as long to play a round of golf, you are your opponents can all hit your shots at the same time. The general gameplay has been cleaned up greatly, and the on-screen aids for hitting shots are excellent for improving your game. If you're looking for a fun, addictive game that is practically flawless, look no further than Tiger Wood PGA Tour 09.
