In Response to the 20 Madden Man Laws

I recently read an article called ”20 Madden Laws” and I couldn’t help but find myself disagreeing with a large majority of the list.

Of course, I'm not saying that my opinions are correct; I'm just providing a second perspective on the etiquette of Madden. For reference, you can find the original article here.

Supposed Rule 1: Quarterback Scrambling Is Not Allowed Unless It's the Actual Play.

The very word “scrambling” implies a quarterback eluding pass rushers to make something out of nothing. If I'm playing as Mcnabb and the defence is foolish enough to leave an open rushing lane, I will exploit their mistake all day. There's a reason why you can hot play any d-man into QB contain before the play. Good players, won't let their opponent abuse them with the QB rush.

Supposed Rule 3: In Franchise Mode, It is Acceptable to Turn Off the Game and Restart If Your Running Back or Quarterback is Injured for Longer Than Three Weeks.

Well that sounds honorable. Like in the real NFL, injuries are a part of the game. Part of the fun is overcoming the adversity. Besides, good GMs always have a good backup ready for arguably the two most important offensive positions.

Supposed Rule 6: Running Down the Clock Is Unacceptable.

Let's say I'm up by 3 with 1:10 left. I'm on offense, it's first down and the opponent has no timeouts. Only an idiot would “honorably” run his plays normally, risking the chance that he would have to punt the ball back to the other team with time left. Be smart and run out the time.

Supposed Rule 7: You Cannot Punt the Ball Out of Bounds to Avoid Tackling the Returner.

It's called strategy. If I'm a good punter, I can usually get the ball out of bounds around where the returner is waiting for the ball. Why would I risk kicking the ball to an explosive runner like Devin Hester. Kicking the ball out of bounds is a form of respect, to the football player and the Madden player.

(This is where it gets absurd)

Supposed Rule 10: There is No Kneeling In Any Online Games.

Just like in rule six, this makes no sense because you're basically risking a turnover or injury by not kneeling. Of course, some players may decide to take a cheap way out by scoring an early touchdown and kneeling out their subsequent possessions. However, all that is doing is conceding their possessions and giving the ball back to you. If you can tie to game up with a single touchdown throughout the entire game, then maybe Madden isn't for you.

Supposed Rule 11: All Games Are To Be Played On All-Madden.

How is this supposed to be a law of Madden? Obviously, playing on All-Madden will help you improve for the stiff online competition but it's up to your discretion about what difficulty to play on.

Supposed Rule 12: When Playing Older Versions of Madden, You Can't Use Madden Cards.

Thanks for that inside information. Of course you can't use Madden cards on older versions of Madden...there aren't any. Madden cards are cheap anyways (5th down? N00b).

Supposed Rule 13: When Playing a Lesser Human Opponent, Pick a Bad Team.

Never play down to your opponent. Use this opportunity to try out some new strategies but never take an lesser opponent for granted.

Supposed Rule 14: If You're Being Shutout Late in the Game, You Cannot Kick a Field Goal to Avoid the Shutout.

Am I supposed to punt the ball on their 20 yard line? Or should I go for the fourth-down conversion and purposely misconvert? Anytime I can score points I will.

Supposed Rule 18: There is No Quitting If Your Star Player Gets Injured.

See supposed rule 3 for a mega-contradiction.

Supposed Rule 19: After a Long-Run It is Allowable to Stop on the One-Yard Line and Wait to Get Knocked In or To Run a Circle Around the Opponent.

Yeah, if you've got no class. Madden already comes with taunts for long runs and passes, anything more is just unnecessary. If Chad Johnson ran to the one-yard line and waited for the other team to catch up, he's would not only get fined but would lose all respect from his peers.

First and foremost, Madden is supposed to be fun. Just play the game how you think it should be played and there should not be any problems. The real problems arise when boys try to make up “Man laws” because they don't have any other ideas for articles.
