Mutant League Hockey was a great game it did not follow convention in any way. First it is a completely original sports game not like anything before it except for the game that it is a sequel to. Being a sequel is also a big part of how it breaks convention, unlike other sequel games which can be lame Mutant League Hockey was better then the Mutant League Football game. Like its predecessor it proved doing something original could make for an enjoyable game for fans of a particular sports game.
There is a surprising amount of trivia for the game. For instance they made a Saturday Morning Cartoon called Mutant League which lasted two seasons based on the two Mutant League games. Another interesting tidbit it that they were going to make a Mutant League Football but by the time they got started Sega was becoming dated and they decided not to make it for a new system. Another interesting thing to note about Mutant League Hockey is that it featured spoofs of real life teams the Mighty Weenies were meant to be the Mighty Ducks for example, teams even had players named from real players of the hockey teams to further the spoof.
If you have not played the game then you probably have no idea what the game is even about and wondering what makes it Mutant League? Well the characters are robots, skeletons, and monsters. The rules are a bit different too. For instance fans throw items onto the ice such as bottles, flails, and the best weapon of all the chainsaw. If you could get a chainsaw and use it well without being killed you could win the game based on one possession with the chainsaw. The game allowed you to kill the other players and if you were behind in goals you could still win by killing enough players so the other team had to forfeit. The fastest way to get a forfeit was to kill the goalies as they only had two but you had to be careful when you tried or they would penalize you if you killed them while a goal was being shot this would give the team a monster goal in place of the goalie.
This is a great off beat funny and fun game. If you like Hockey games it is an easy to play fun hockey game in its own right. While Mutant League Football was a hard to play tough football game Mutant League Hockey is more accessible for anyone to play. If you can find a second player to play with the game is a lot more fun. This is a game with a cult following you either played it as a kid or didn't. If you did play it you loved it if not you had no idea it existed.
