Tips for the Struggling Guitar Hero

Here are some tips to help people having trouble with Guitar Hero.

Here is a list of tips for people who are having troubles playing Guitar Hero.

  • Take the tutorial! You may feel like a "noob" taking it, but it helps.
  • Relax. You can't play when you're all tense, loosen up.
  • I know you've heard this one before, Feel the Music. All that means is to just go with the flow of the song. Sing if you have to.
  • It helps if you listen to the music when you're not playing the game. Personally I have every song from Guitar Hero III on my mp3.
  • Don't play songs that you can't play. Don't play songs that you keep failing it'll just make your more frustrated, play songs that your good at, master those, then the other songs will seem easier.
  • When playing on hard or expert try to slide your hand down the neck rather then stretching your pinky, you will save yourself many cramps in the future.
  • Exercise your pinky whenever possible. If you're sitting at school or work, start tapping your pinky on your desk. Do this in every possible situation.
  • Use Star Power. Some people don't like to use it.... USE IT!
  • If you play standing up use the strap to help hold the guitar up.
  • If you are one of those people who absolutely hate rock music, then maybe you shouldn't be playing this game.
  • Don't take it so seriously, it's meant to be fun.
  • Use hammer-ons and pull-offs. They help on the harder songs.Rather than pushing the strummer down with your thumb, hold it like a pick and strum both up and down.
  • If you're having trouble hitting notes try calibrating audio and video lag. It might be the game not you.
  • Try to blink when you play, I know it's hard but when your eyes dry out your vision gets blurry and you can't see the note. I like to blink one eye at a time, don't do it if people are watching.
  • When you get to a long break in the song, use that time to stretch out any sore muscles, scratch any itches, blink, etc.
  • Try to minimize other sounds. This may mean turning off the radio or TV.
  • Whenever moving up a level play the easy songs first.
  • The most important tip is to HAVE FUN, it is just a game after all.

Well I have played Guitar Hero for about 2 years now. I play expert, and I have noticed that when you start on easy you never think you can do hard or expert. I started on hard and just kept practicing the same song over until I could pass it. After that I could pass a lot of songs. I have also noticed that people who hold the guitar with there thumb wrapped aroun the guitar neck cant slide there hand up and down when there is orange, therefore you actually really hold the guitar with your thumb pressed on the back of the neck. It helps a lot if your frustrated with the orange.

I've played GH since it first came out on PS2. The biggest mistake I see people make is trying to stretch their pinky to play on expert. NOOOO, wrong wrong WRONG! Your pinky and ring finger use the same tendons and for most people, including myself, its REALLY hard to move your pinky completely independent of your ring finger. The answer? Shift your grip. Keep your fingers on the Red, Yellow, Blue, And Orange, then stretch your pointer finger to play the Green. This makes it much easier and possible. I've played guitar for 6 years and anytime you play a break or fast sequence of notes, you use for pointer finger to tap the notes. It is easier and much more natural. Also, when playing GH, try not to overstrum. Everyone (me too) tends to try to strum faster when there are a lot of notes close together. Actually, you can make your score worse by doing this if you miss a note, because you are not hitting the note and you are strumming on a blank spot. The best thing to remember is that like 99% of the time, the difficult runs can be played by strumming once at the beginning of the passage, and tapping the remaining notes without strumming, just like a real guiter (TADA!)
