10 ways to help improve your skills in Guitar Hero.
If you have trouble learning to use the fifth fret, try medium with three fingers.
You must learn to hit the fifth fret, so try to beat some songs on medium with three fingers. You'll learn to move across the fret board on a low difficulty. Do this without the index finger, then without the pinky finger.
Strum up and down.
If you are on a song with repeatitive strumming, go up and down to keep it steady. Also, some songs on Hard or Expert require the speed given by up and down strumming.
Go back and five star easier songs.
You will gain skill by trying to hit the harder parts of songs. Plus, you will have to use star power for points instead of survival.
Train online.
If you have access to the internet with Guitar Hero, it can be of great help. Battles allow you to train survival. Pro Face-off gives you a fun chance to go through the whole song. Co-op is also a fun distraction and let's you play bass and rhythm parts you wouldn't normally play.
Practice.
Most people avoid this, but it does work. Set the hard parts to slowest and don't move to slower until you 90%. Then keep doing this until you can survive on full speed.
Go back a game.
If you are playing GHIII or later, try to play GHII. You must be much more accurate and the songs require different skills.
Use hammer-ons and pull-offs.
I know everyone says this, but it is of key importance in harder levels. Try Cult of Personality on Hard using hammer-ons and pull-offs.
Move on.
If you are stuck in career, go to quickplay and beat the higher songs. Sometimes they are easier for you. Oftentimes it will help.
Mess with the volume.
Go into options and sounds. Turn the guitar volume off or band volume off. Or mute the TV. Sometimes little tricks like this can help.
Play for the fun of it.
Try to relax and play purely for fun. That will oftentimes help you stay focused and not break things if you fail a song.
Hey, I (the writer) can easily five star Stricken on Expert.

Muting the TV while playing a music game? Brilliant! But really, don't you think that's kinda MISSING THE ENTIRE F$#*ING POINT?!

Tghis is supposed to MAXIMISE SKILL, not for fun playing or performance. And it does sound cool to just hear guitar or just band. Or the nonmusic sounds(lol).
