Burnout Dominator

A game review of the latest game in the series of destruction games by EA.

It's about speed, it's about crashes and it's all about Burnouts. Take racing aggression to the max! Burnout Dominator is your way to escape the ethics of racing and play it dirty on the city streets. Burnout Dominator is the new kid in the destruction series of Electronic Arts (EA). Perform take downs near misses and fill up your Supercharge bar to unleash the wildest form of nitro ever seen in a game. Press and hold the R1 button and zoom ahead of your rival by performing burnouts; chain your burnouts and drive dangerously to earn more supercharges in turn perform more burnouts and if you had thought nitro made you go real fast. Watch your weight with Supercharges.

The vehicles are modeled after popular cars, and come in 7 different varieties called The Classic series, the factory series, the tuners, the hotrods, the supers, race special and the Dominator series. You can hurt rival cars with shunts, side swipes and perform take downs which give you lead in normal races, make you score dominator points and give you supercharges for burnouts. In some races, you need to undertake a minimum number of take downs. There are medals in the end of each race which basically classify your wins into Gold, Silver and Bronze.

After you complete a certain number of wins you get Trophies like the Rookie, Fearless and Dominator. There are a lot of "unlockables" in the game, like newer cars, newer tracks, plus if you smash your rivals into certain barricades you can unlock "signature shortcuts" for each level, which helps you win races and beat track times later in the game.

Do you enjoy the sound of twisted metal and a tide through shrapnel showers? If yes then Burnout Dominator is for you but before playing a game like this you have to be prepared to throw reality out of the window as the series itself is built upon a different setting than a typical racing game. The cars do have variety in handling but sadly feature no stats, and the only way to guess handling types is through the naming conventions and body designs used on them. Crashes are not realistic and happen at random levels of impact.

Sometimes cars may hit you head on without crashing and at other times your car may crash just because you touched a car decelerating in front of you. If you have been a follower of the series, you'll find this version somewhat similar to Burnout 3, which has racing as the primary element of the game, though the Maniac mode revisits the traffic bashing from Burnout: Revenge. There is a nice party mode in which you can race with your friends with only one controller.

The visuals are similar to the older versions of games in the series. The graphics are pretty good as of all PS2 games especially those of Electronic Arts. The soundtrack is loaded with tracks from Avril Lavigne, N.E.R.D and the like. In short, Burnout Dominator is a fun game for aggressive competitive disorder.
