Mage Specs and When to Use Them

This is a guide on where to place talent points on a mage when leveling and what specs are good for raiding.

The best talent spec for a mage when leveling from 1-60 is fire. The high damage along with extra critical chance, stuns, damage over time affects, and an additional AoE are all useful when questing and grinding.

  • Levels 10-14: 5 points in “Improved Fireball”. This reduces your casting time of fireball by 0.5 seconds.
  • Levels 14-19: 5 points in “Impact”. Your fire spells have a 10% chance to stun for 2 seconds.
  • Levels 20-24: 5 points in “Ignite”. Critical strikes burn the target for 40% of the spell's damage over 4 seconds.
  • Levels 25-26: 2 points in “Flame Throwing”. Fire spells have a range of 6 more yards.
  • Level 27: 1 point in “Pyroblast”. A 6 second cast time spell that does 148-185 fire damage, then 56 damage over 12 seconds. The damage increases with higher ranks. Because of the long cast time, this spell should not be used for grinding but is better suited for instances or quests where you need the extra damage.
  • Level 28-29: 2 points in “Burning Soul”. Your fire spells will have a 70% chance to not be interrupted and you gain 10% less threat
  • Level 30: 1 point in “Blast Wave”. This is an AoE that radiates out of you like Frost Nova. It does 201-241 damage to all enemies in the radius and dazes them for 6 seconds. The damage increases with higher ranks.
  • Levels 31-33: 3 points in “Critical Mass”. You gain a 6% chance to critical with fire spells.
  • Levels 34-36: 3 points in “Improved Fire Blast”. Decreases the cool down of Fire Blast by 1.5 seconds. We skipped this spell before because getting Pyroblast, Blast Wave and Critical Mass was more important.
  • Levels 37-39: 3 points in “Fire Power”. Increases fire damage by 6%.
  • Level 40: 1 point in “Combustion”. When activated your critical chance with fire spells in increased by 10%. Every time you do not critically hit someone your critical chance increases by another 10%. The affect goes away after 3 critical hits.
  • Levels 41-42: 2 points in “Fire Power”. With the first 3 points your fire damage is increased by a total of 10%. We skipped the last 2 points to get Combustion.
  • Levels 43-45: 2 points in “Molten Fury”. Increases damage done by fire by 20% when attacking a target that has under 20% health. Use this if you want to do more instances or PvE.

OR

  • 2 points in “Blazing Speed”: Increases move speed by 10% when hit by a melee or ranged attack. This has a 50% chance to happen and lasts for 8sec. Use this if you want to do more PvP.
  • Levels 46-49: 5 points in “Empowered Fireball”. Your Fireball gains a 15% bonus from your spell damage bonuses.
  • Level 50: 1 point in “Dragon's Breath”. Targets in a cone in front of the caster take 370 to 430 Fire damage and are Disoriented for 3 sec. Any direct damaging attack will revive targets. Damage increases with higher ranks.
  • From now on you will pup your points in the arcane tree.
  • Levels 51-52: 2 points in “Arcane Subtlety”. Reduces your target's resistance to all spells by 10 and reduces threat of arcane spells by 40%.
  • Levels 53-55: 4 points in “Arcane Focus”. Reduces the chance your target can resist arcane spells by 6%.
  • Levels 55-60: 4 points in “Arcane Concentration”. Gives your spells a 10% chance of entering a Clear casting state where your next spell costs no mana.

Level 70 Raiding build. This is also ok for PvP. 40/21/0

Arcane:

  • 2 Points in Arcane Subtly
  • 4 Points in Arcane Focus
  • 5 Points in Arcane Concentration
  • 3 points in Arcane Impact
  • 1 point in Arcane Fortitude
  • 2 points in Improved Counter spell
  • 3 points in Arcane Meditation
  • 1 point in Presence of Mind
  • 5 points in Arcane Mind
  • 3 points in Arcane Instability
  • 3 points in Arcane Potency
  • 1 point in Arcane Power
  • 2 points in Spell Power
  • 5 points in Mind mastery

Fire:

  • 5 points in Improved Fireball
  • 5 points in Impact
  • 5 points in Ignite
  • 2 points in Flame Throwing
  • 1 point in Pyroblast
  • 2 points in Burning Soul
  • 1 point in Blast Wave

The good things about this build are that you have a much larger mana pool and will do much more damage because of Mind Mastery. You will be able to silence and will also have the core skills of fire. With Presence of Mind and Pyroblast you have instant Pyroblasts with only a 3 minute cool down.

Arcane Power is good when DPSing a boss. I prefer to pop it before I PoM and pyro, then I can get off a couple of fireballs before it runs out. Best of luck raiding!
