Warcraft 3 Tips

A few tips I have discovered while playing Warcraft 3. Note that these are useless without a good strategy, but can bolster an already good one.

Here are 19 tips to all you Warcraft III players out there. They are not a replacement for strategy, however, I use them but have a bad strategy, and I still lose sometimes. These are not cheats, just a few tips I picked up. Enjoy!

  1. Always have a Goblin Zepplin with 3 peasants in it, so if the enemy destroys your buildings, you can build more.
  2. Make a second base early, so if the enemy destroys your first base, you won't lose.
  3. Build some buildings far away from your base in isolated areas, that way the enemy will have to find them before they can win, and they can be distracted while you rebuild your base using tactic #1.
  4. Take a unit that can destroy trees, ideally a mortar team, and bomb a little clearing in a forest. Then take a zepplin with a peasant and build a few buildings there; especially a workshop, so you can be pouring out upgraded flying machines while the enemy is looking for you.
  5. Build 20+ defense towers so you can't lose too easily.
  6. Try to level up your hero as much as possible.
  7. When playing 2-player games with someone better than you, it would be a good idea to play it on a 4+ player map, so there are plenty of creeps.
  8. Use the enemy's large army against itself! Take a Far Seer with level 3 chain lightning, and fill up his inventory with mana potions from your voodoo lounge. Then, when the enemy attacks, cast CL repeatedly on their heroes, and when mana runs out, just use one of the potions!
  9. When playing as the humans, as soon as you get a blacksmith shop, make nothing but riflemen from your barracks until knights are available; also focus all of your upgrades on riflemen.
  10. Build multiple barracks and hotkey them to #2, so you can just press "2, r," and get several riflemen.
  11. Set the Rally point of all your military-unit-producing buildings to your hero. You can also do this by selecting the building and right-clicking on the hero's portrait in the left-hand corner of the screen. Once you have two heroes, build two of each of these buildings and have them each put a rally point on one hero. The less experienced hero should have slightly more units than the other until he catches up.r
  12. Once the Creeps are gone, frequently send a group of units over to the enemy base to get experience for your hero; the hero gets points even if he isn't in the battle. Only do this if your hero has less experience than the enemy; if the enemy has less, he will benefit more from this than you will.
  13. On levels with shipyards, always have at least 6 ships, each with 2 peasants in them, in case the enemy destroys your buildings. Also have several flying units tasked on each ship, to protect it if the enemy finally comes.
  14. In the "Booty Bay" level, try to get on the left-hand side; if you haven't noticed, there is a little platform in the right-side's forest. Bring a zepplin with a peasant and a mortar team to the platform. Let the MT down, and have it bomb a clearing in the enemy's forest. Do this while you attack their base with a few other MTs so they won't hear the noise. Then, drop the peasant down to the clearing and build a Workshop. Have it build as many MTs as possible, do a flare on the enemy's base, then bomb it! They will never see it coming! They will think, "YIE! THE TREES ARE BOMBING ME!" Just make sure the MTs don't try to bomb them before the time comes. The first MT will try to attack them, so as soon as he comes out, make sure he only attacks the trees, and then put him back in the zepplin where he won't get into any trouble.
  15. Once they become available, flying machines are one of my favorite units; they can only be killed by ranged units, when upgraded can attack land and air units, and they only cost 1 food, so you can have over 75 of them! But, never try to attack a night elf base with less than 50 of them. I learned that the hard way; those ancient protectors can destroy one in 2 shots, so beware.
  16. Don't neglect your siege engines! They can make very good AA weapons when upgraded, and several of them can demolish a building very quickly.
  17. Never cheat. Cheating may let you win easily, but it never gives you the satisfaction of winning, and if you get attached to them in SP, you won't be able to win in MP! And besides, you can be banned from playing if you cheat in multiplayer!
  18. Use taunts to your advantage. When you send puzzling taunts, it sometimes causes the enemy to stop and try to figure them out, rather than build up their army. Also, some taunts can simply discourage, or control the enemy. A few ideas are: "Alrighty, time for my morning jog. Oops! I almost stepped on a bug! Oh... that's your army." this would make the enemy think he has a tiny army, try to build a bigger one, and run out of money. Or "BEWARE OF EXPLODING SHEEP!!! baaaa... baaaaaaaa... KABLOOM!" this might cause the enemy to be paranoid of sheep. Or "I hope your item shop is protected! For your sake." this might cause the enemy to move everything to his item shop.
  19. Hotkey everything. That way you can zip right from your army to your base, and back again with the touch of a few buttons.
