Warcraft 3: General Introduction

If you've never played the game Warcraft 3, then you don't know what your missing. This is a general introduction to the game.

Warcraft 3 is one of the greatest games created by Blizzard, which is a real-time strategy game that you can play with people from around the world. This is an extremely enjoyable game, and can keep you playing for years. There are four types of Warcraft 3 games, two of which are only available to you if you don't have internet access.

The original one, known as “melee” was how Warcraft was intended to be played as. You start out with a base, and build up resources and armies to vanquish your enemies. The twist on this from the previous Warcraft game is the fact that you can summon heroes. Heroes gain experience points to increase their level, which will add a skill point and additional stats, making them stronger. Heroes can also pick up and purchase items, but beware that when you lose your hero, it takes a lot of time to resurrect him or her. In Warcraft 3, you can choose from four different races, including the Humans, Undead, Night Elves, and Orcs. Each race has very different units, heroes, and tactics. This type of game can really be frustrating when you are losing, especially on internet play where players are unevenly matched.

The second type of game is campaigns, or role-playing style maps. In this mode, the general idea is that you have one (or more depending on the map) hero, and if all of your heroes die, you lose the game. In online play, these types of games branches off into two categories: Endless and Quest. In an endless type, the game doesn't end; you just keep getting stronger and stronger for the sake of it. No final boss to kill, just to have fun. In a quest type, you band together with other people to fight enemies as a team, and usually each player has a role, like the “tanker” (one who is supposed to receive all the damage) and the “healer” (one who is suppose to heal damaged heroes; a vital role).

The third type of game is usually a custom map created by other people, with intentions of a type of less serious gaming, like tower defenses, “tag”, and other sorts. There are a huge amount of games like these, which are played everyday online, because these aren't competitive, they're a great way to have fun without anyone yelling or screaming at you for making a mistake. Some people only play Warcraft for these relatively relaxing games, although they're more likely to be only in the fourth type of game.

The fourth type of game is simply unique; a custom map created by an unofficial player, (Icefrog) yet is a huge phenomenon throughout online gaming. A game known as Defense of the Ancients (DotA), it has taken Warcraft III by storm. This game is played with 10 players, and has people playing it all over the world (especially in the Philippines). DotA has inspired fan art, poems, and even music (such as “Vi sitter här i venten och spelar” a popular song created by Basshunter). Although I won't go in-depth of this game, be sure to try it if you ever decide to play Warcraft III online. Some people have called it addicting like crack.
