Rpg's

Top five picks for RPG junkies.

This RPG column will only cover RPG's on systems other than pc because mmorpg's are too wide a topic. These games I've chosen out of the dozens upon dozens of RPG's that I've played. These are just a few that I really really liked.

  1. Morrowind

This RPG is the third installment of the elder scrolls series which was more recently followed up with Oblivion (which will appear later in this list). Morrowind features a wide array of hundreds of different creatures, people, and landscapes. The sheer amount of quests you can do while leveling up your character, is utterly staggering. Your character alone can differ in what kind of weapons, armor, magic, and other areas of interest that it wants to use. The game itself was made back in the day before xbox360 so it's for xbox and PC. But once you start playing this game you can tell that it's far ahead of it's time. The main quests consists of a series of seemingly trivial tasks that turn out in the end to be something bigger than you ever would've thought at the beginning of the game. This RPG in itself triumphs and I place it at #1 without debate.
  2. The Knights of the Old Republic series

I've heard recently (and it's possibly a just a rumor) that KOTOR 3 is in fact in production. At the sound of this I nearly knocked my brother unconcious with excitement because the first two installments of this game were utterly amazing. In KOTOR 1, you're a seemingly strangely placed soldier with no real direction until on Taris you meet Bastila, a jedi apprentice. From there you embark on an epic journey to find the star maps to locate the legendary star forge, a giant weapon capable of mass destruction, and with a large twist near the end of the game you realize your true identity (sorry no spoilers in case some of you reading have never played). KOTOR 2 you're a seemingly useless ex-jedi who has been banished from the order. You set off a journey to find your old masters and on the way meet lots of different people. In both of these games you can choose what weapons, clothes, and even force moves you want to use. I find them both VERY entertaining (mostly because I like the satisfaction of being very evil) and I easily place these at #2.
  3. Mass Effect

Lots of people said that they didn't like this game and I dont understand the hate. It was a breath of fresh air after a couple of relatively dissappointing RPG's came my way. Being in the future you can choose what guns you're good with, if you're a technology kind of person, or (and this was the best part for me) you could even use magic. Usually in futuristic RPG's you cant use the magical options because of the advanced technology. But Mass Effect brought to the table something I'd been waiting for. Along with using guns you can also use push, pull, throw, lift, and a whole array of different types of "spell-like" powers. The numerous different races and baddies in the game gave it challenging gameplay that left me wanting more and more to get to the next fight. Overall one of the best RPG's out there.
  4. Oblivion

The fourth installment of the elderscrolls series, it's basically Morrowind with better graphics except you are in an entirely different country. New landscape, new weapons, and new quests. This game is much more action oriented than its predecessor. The main quest is a series of running into a Hell-like environment to kill demon-like creatures. The concept of it fascinates me and thus I love the game. Lots of similar gameplay attributes as Morrowind so I dont really have much more to add.
  5. Fable

Being a closed RPG I didn't like it as much as morrowind or oblivion. But still, being able to grow horns, have my eyes glow red, and lob off the head of any passer-by just happens to be part of my definition of fun. In the game you start with the steriotypical beginning of being a farmboy, your parents die in a bandit raid, you go to learn to be a hero, you grow up, you get vengeance. Shocking. Really. But throughout the game you eventually become so powerful that literally nothing in the game can kill you unless you stand there naked and let them beat on you for three hours. GOD COMPLEX. It's fun for a while but can get boring. But still leaves this game at #5.
