Not everybody knows yet, but Jagex posted on the Runescape main website Runescape that Runescape will be shut down as of August 8th, 2008. This article inquires as to why and how.
The News
Jagex Ltd. posted on the Runescape website that the game will be shut down on August 8th, 2008. The story is not up on the front page; you will have to dig deeper. If you click on “Browse the News Archives” button, you will see a “Website Update” about 2/3rds of the way down that says “Runescape Shutting Down.” The story has no date, but if you click on the story, it reads:

“We're sorry to inform you that RuneScape will no longer exist as of August 8th, 2008. The credit card companies have sued us for too much money for how much the game brings Jagex profit. Too many people were using stolen cards to fund their member accounts, and Runescape is going down with the stealers. It has been a good run, but all good things must come to an end. All monthly credits will be backcredited to the accounts from which they were taken from. […]”
This has come as a shock to all players, but some players had seen it coming for years. “I knew the moment they announced trade restrictions and killed Player Killing in the Wilderness,” says Fredmcgarry, a longtime player of the game. Fredmcgarry, along with thousands of others, is quitting.

Runescape shutting down means millions of unhappy gamers that will likely flock to other MMORPGs, such as WoW, or other multiplayer games, such as Xbox Live.
Jagex's headquarters in London will be auctioned off on January 1st, 2009. Server locations (US, Amsterdam, Australia, Canada) will be boarded up and sold to private investors.
“There may even be a riot or two at various places around the world,” says game philosopher Ahmed Ypanovvik (formerly Runescape “Choppermad”). Ypanovvik, who lives in Uzbekistan, is leading the fight to keep the game running till mid 2009, but his hopes look bleak.
What to Expect
- Packed forums
- Unresponsive Jagex Company
- Ingame moderators downplaying things
- No new updates
- Advertisements on the Runescape page to their other games
- Lots of unhappy players
- Maybe a real world riot or two
- Thousands of ingame riots
So there you have it, plain and simple. Runescape is closing.
