Many people don't suspect it but Runescape is suffering from the opposite of inflation. In inflation, prices of items dramatically increase, but in Runescape, prices are slowly dropping.
I've been playing Runescape for over four years now, and to me it is easy to notice that prices on items have slowly dropped from when I started playing.
When I started playing again about three weeks ago I was on my way to merchant Rune scimitars. Before I quit playing, Rune scimitars were about 25k-30k. When I offered the person I was trading with 30k, he laughed and said it was way overpriced. He then told me that Rune scimitars were 14k-15k. That proves that items are losing value. I also noticed the price of full rune was 120k. When I played, full rune was 180k-200k.
I think that prices on items will keep dropping. After a while, newbies will be able to afford Rune scimitars and other items that higher level characters use. I think that by now it is too late to stop the price decline. If anyone has any idea to stop this, then they should tell people right away, or else items would be so cheap that merchanting items would be useless.
