Runescape Guide for Woodcutting Skills

Information about axes, logs, and random events - and how to reach high-level woodcutting.

Introduction

Woodcutting is a popular basic skill that is available for both members and non-members. Cutting trees is very simple and only requires an ax/hatchet. This guide will teach you the basics of woodcutting. This skill is essential for fire makers, chefs, and fetchers. The logs will also be profitable as you get more and more experienced in the skill.

The only materials you will need to take on this skill is an ax (also called a hatchet), and lots of patience. I would recommend chopping trees with a friend because it tends to get boring after a while. For those who are also into the fire making skill, don't forget to bring a tinderbox. And those who enjoy fletching should always carry a knife while they do woodcutting.

Woodcutting axes

The better the ax you use, the faster and easier it will be for you to chop down the tree. There are 8 kinds in all, some requiring a higher woodcutting level than others:

  • Bronze - Woodcutting Level: 1, Price: less than 200gp
  • Iron - Woodcutting Level: 1, Price: less than 500gp
  • Steel - Woodcutting Level: 6, Price: less than 1,000gp
  • Black - Woodcutting Level: 6, Price: less than 3,000gp
  • Mithril - Woodcutting Level: 21, Price: 1,000-2,000gp
  • Adamant - Woodcutting Level: 31, Price: 2,000-5,000gp
  • Rune - Woodcutting Level: 41, Price: 15,000gp
  • Dragon (Members) - Woodcutting Level: 61, Price: Around to 3,000,000gp

Trees

  • Regular/Evergreen/Dead - Woodcutting Level: 1 (Found Throughout Runescape, Evergreens will also give sap and Dead trees in high level wilderness may contain charchoal.)
  • Achey(Members) - Woodcutting Level: 1 (Feldip Hills, available after the completion of Big Chompy Bird Hunting Quest.)
  • Scrapey (Members) - Woodcutting Level: 1 (Trouble Brewing Quest)
  • Oak - Woodcutting Level: 15
  • Willow - Woodcutting Level: 30 (Found near water.)
  • Teak (Members) - Woodcutting Level: 35 (Found in Tai Bwo Wannai, Mos Le' Harmless, Ape Atoll, South-west of Castle Wars, Kharazi Jungle, and Uzer.)
  • Dramen (Members) - Woodcutting Level: 36 (Lost City Quest, Found on Entrana.)
  • Swaying (Members) - Woodcutting Level: 40 (Found in Relleka, Used to make Lyres.)
  • Maple - Woodcutting Level: 45 (Although the logs are not members only, maple trees are only found in member locations such as Seers Village.)
  • Hollow (Members) - Woodcutting Level: 45 (Found in Canifis, Used to make Splitbark.)
  • Mahogany (Members) - Woodcutting Level: 50 (Found in Tai Bwo Wannai, Mos Le' Harmless, Ape Atoll, and Uzer.)
  • Arctic Pine (Members) - Woodcutting Level: 54 (Fremennik Isles Quest)
  • Dream (Members) - Woodcutting Level: 55 (Lunar Diplomacy Quest)
  • Yew - Woodcutting Level: 60 (Found Throughout Runescape)
  • Magic (Members) - Woodcutting Level: 75 (Found in the Sorcerer's Tower, and the Magic Training Arena.)

Random Events

  • Bird Nest (Members) - While you are busy chopping trees, a bird nest may randomly fall out. There may be valuables inside the bird nest. Rabbit foots will increase the chance of one falling out of your tree! Also, bird nests are key ingredients in the Saradomin's Brew potion.
  • Broken ax (ax Breaks into 2 Parts) - This random even occurs quite often while woodcutting. To solve this problem, just use the ax handle with the ax head to re-attach the parts. Now your ax is as good as new! This also occurs frequently with pick axes.
  • Dented ax - The dented axs random event can be annoying but still easy to fix. When your woodcutting, an Ent may interrupt and break your ax. You will have a broken, useless ax in your inventory. To fix this, go to the battle ax shop in Lumbridge and use the broken ax with Bob. He will fix your ax for a cheap price.
  • Tree Spirit - Normally when you woodcut a long time, a tree spirit may pop out of no where and start to attack. It will be a lot high in combat level than you. Be careful! If you don't have any food at hand I wouldn't recommend trying to kill it. If you have level 43 prayer, which is the Protection of Melee option, use it while killing the tree spirit. It shouldn't be too hard. Tree Spirits drop common random event items such as gems and coins, but they also drop different axs.

Journey to Level 99 Woodcutting

  • Level 1-20
    Cut Normal/Evergreen/Dead Trees.
  • Level 20-30
    Cut Oak Trees
  • Level 30-50
Cut Willow Trees, the logs are worth about 25 each. (1k Willows = 25,000gp)
  • Level 50-85
Cut Maple Trees, the log price varies from 75-90gp each. (1k Maple = 75,000-90,000gp) Non-members should continue with Willows.
  • Level 85-99
Cut Yew and Magic Trees. For training I would suggest Yew (even better, stick with Willows!) but if you're a member and you want to make some good money, magic logs can be sold to high level fetchers for around 1k each. (1k Magic Logs = 1,000,000gp) Non-members will only be able to cut up to Yew, and the logs are worth about 300gp each. (1k Yew = 300,000gp)

Good Luck on your journey to woodcutting success!
