Fishing in RuneScape is a non-combat skill that can make you lots of money at higher levels. The reason this is a good way to make money is becuase everyone needs food to fight with especially at higher combat levels.
To starts off i will talk about the different techniques you can use to catch various fish.
at level 1 the only thing you can use is a net and the only fish you will be able to catch is shrimp. they can be found in many parts of runescape and are almost worthless becuase the don't heal very much. at level 15 you can catch anchovies with your net too. thes heal a little more than shrimp. a good place to start catching these fish is just south of the draynor bank. Also if you are a member who has completed the SWAN SONG quest you can catch monkfish at level 62.
Bait fishing at sea is the next thing i would like to talk about. at level 5 fishing you can catch sardines and at level 10 you can catch herring. to fish here you need to have a fishing rod and bait. these can be bought at the port sarim fishing store. oh i almost forgot, you use one piece of bait per fish caught so make sure you have lots of bait with you! A good fishing spot is just south of the draynor village bank. (the same place where you net fished)
Bait fishing in a river. the only fish you can catch here is pike. again you will need a fishing rod and bait. some good places to catch these are at the river in lumbridge and at the river jest before the barbarian village.
Fly fishing in rivers is also a good way to fish. you can catch salmon and trout. you need to buy a fly fishing rod at port sarim as well as feathers. this is bye far the best way to powerfish becuase the catch rate is so high and you get decent exp per fish caught. fish at lumbridge or the barbarian village for these fish. level 38 members can catch rainbow fish. this can only be done bye using stripey feathers. the feathers can be obtained bye hunting tropical wagtails and the fish can be cooked for eating or left raw to hunt barb tailed kebbits.
Harpooning is a higher level of fishing than the rest. you can catch tuna or swordfish. the only place for non members is the island of karamja at the docks. members at 76 fishing can catch sharks and they heal 20hp which is the highest of all fish. the best place for these is prabably at the beach in catherby.
Note: if you are going to karamja remember to bring 30gold for the boat ride.
Caging is basically just fishing for lobster. lobster is for many the preferred training food beacuse it is easy to catch and cook and heals a decent amount of hp. to fish for these bad boys you need to have a lobster pot which can be bought at any fishing store for 20 gp. karamja is the only place for free players to catch them but memebers can fish for them in many places. a good place id say to start is catherby.
There are other forms of fishing but all of those are not good exp and they are mostly quest related fish
