Map Making in Runescape

As you stumble down the long and winding street, you can’t help but think that something is wrong. The lights aren’t in the right place, and none of the signs are familiar to you. If only you had a map to guide you...

Well, map-making in Runescape is easier than you can imagine. With a little time and a Paint program, you can accomplish this task with ease:

  1. Go to the area you wish to map, and open up your Paint program.
  2. When you are ready to begin mapping, there are a few things to take note of. You must be facing the same direction each time you want to take a screen capture, or you will have to rotate the image later, and that's just no fun at all. Now that you are ready, hit the Print Screen button, usually located at the upper right of your keyboard somewhere.
  3. Now that you have captured the screen, switch to your Paint program and either go to the Edit Menu and select Paste, or use the (CTRL + V) keyboard shortcut to paste the image in.
  4. Since you now have the raw image in the Paint program, you can cut it any way you like. The easiest way is to simply select the Square cut tool and cut out the section of the Screenshot that is the mini-map (upper right-hand corner).
  5. Well, now comes the tedious part. You must walk around the area that you want to map, constantly taking Screenshots and pasting them together. Patience is key; if you take your time now it will all turn out better in the long run than if you rush through it. If you want to make the map really nice and neat, you need to cut out the yellow and white dots as well. This is easy, as you can just cut a square of color out and paste over them, or just use the brush.

Nobody said that mapping would be a quick and painless process. However, you can make it at least bearable and not so ho-hum by taking your time, and knowing how to do it. Hopefully, after reading this, you will have a better understanding, and the knowledge to do it yourself. After all, self-reliance is one of the best things in Runescape.

Tips:

  • Never leave the little yellow and red dots on a map, unless it is the locations of monsters; it just looks unprofessional.
  • It's easiest to keep the map pointed North than to try any other way.
  • Try an area that is easy to do first, and then slowly work your way up to larger and more dangerous areas.
  • If you are unsure of an area, either bring your best armor and lots of food to beat any monsters, or just leave it all at the bank; in case of death. It's best to do so in non-populated worlds.
