Range is one of the most underrated stats. In fact, range can dominate the wilderness. By combat 65, if you're a pure, you could easily be hitting a string of 16s (with the right stats, of course). Here is the training path you should follow to achieve your pking goals:
Range lvls 1-20: I would recommend training at the monastery with bronze arrows. You will need at least three hundred. The monks at the monastery heal, so you don't have to worry about clicking new monks when your monk dies, because your monk probably won't die for a while. No food is required because you can run away and ask a monk to heal you. Pking is always an option, but you will be owned by mages this early.
Range lvls 21-40: This is a very difficult level to train. I would suggest training at varrock sewers at the ghosts. In this room, there is a chair; range behind that. An alternative is to train at the barbarian village in the bar behind the tables. There is some meat and beer there, but since other people like taking this, you may want to bring just a little food.
Range lvls 40-60: By now, you are ready to pk. However, to train outside of the wildy, I would say you should go to the stronghold of security and power arrows (to power arrows means to range them and not pick them up). On the second level, there is a room with giant rats and flesh crawlers. There is a space there where only one giant rat can attack you. The room is in the northernmost part of the level, to the west of the starting place. The spot is in the southernmost part of the room, the only space at the bottom center. If you want, you can pick up your arrows, but that can be tedious.
Range lvls 60+: Lesser demons now become an option. The problem is that this training spot is so heavily favored by both rangers and meleers that it can become crowded. There is a spot between some stalagmites and a corpse (there are three barriers forming a triangle) where lessers can VERY rarely touch you. Therefore, it is not required to bring too much food. It still makes sense to train in the stronghold of security. Another option, which could still be available for range lvls 40-60, is hobgoblins. Near the crafting guild, there is a place with cows, a river, and an “island”. On the side of the river with the cows, you can shoot at the island, which has hobgoblins. Note that you can not pick up your arrows if you do this.
PRAYER:
For rangers, prayer could easily be stayed away from and never touched. However, I would suggest getting 44 prayer when you get around 60 range. Not only do you get 15% extra range for a limited time, but you could have protection prayers under your belt.
Getting these prayer levels can often be difficult. If you feel that spending a couple hundred k on big bones will not irritate you financially, go ahead and buy them. For the not-so-financially-lucky, going to the boneyard is often easier. There are a couple spots where big bones respawn. Look them up on rune HQ in the prayer guide. There is a very helpful map there.
Since the account is pure, going to the boneyard will require some lobs (I suggest around 10). Try logging if you see someone that can attack you. Bring 3 items. For those that don't know, the boneyard is located north of giants, which is in level 16 wilderness. The boneyard is located in level 26 wilderness.
HYBRIDING:
Hybriding means being pure, but having 2 main stat types. For instance, you could have both melee and mage when you pk. Rangers have three hybrid types available to them:
- Range-melee
- Range-mage
- Melee-range-mage (known to me as a tribrid)
For all of these, it would be smart to max out all the stats so you don't gain combats. Since that is a vague sentence, think of it this way. Add up your attack/strength levels. Multiply this sum by 2. Now for range and mage, multiply by 3. Try getting these numbers to be equal. For example:
- 52 range 52*3=156
- 52 mage 52*3=156
- 40 att
- 40 str 40+40=80, 80*2=160
This player is NOT maxed out on either range or mage. To have the best range and mage stats without affecting combat levels, the player should get 60 range and 60 mage, because 60*3=180. Another example:
- 73 range 70*3=219
- 70 mage 70*3=210
- 50 att
- 60 str 50+60=110, 110*2=220
This player IS maxed out in range, is NOT maxed out in mage, and IS maxed out in str. Here, we see that strength is the player's principle stat. However, if he gained one more range level, the 219 figure would increase to 222. Since range would have the greatest number, it would affect the combat. Therefore, even though the range number is not as big as the melee number, the range stat is still maxed out.
DEFENSE:
Defense is supposed to be avoided from. Some rangers who accidentally gained defense levels decided to just get it up to 10. Others have 20 or 40 defense. Once you have reached around 93-95 range, you should consider getting 40 defense. Keep in mind that 40 defense is only useful if you have completed dragon slayer and can wear the dragonhide body. If you do decide to do dragon slayer, be careful of the following nonmember quests:
Restless ghost will get you enough prayer to reach level 9…Only use this quest if you plan on gaining prayer as well.
Vampire slayer: not too much to worry about, you'll gain quite a bit of attack xp, but if your range is high enough, this shouldn't make a difference.
Imp catcher and witch's potion: Neither of these can be too much of a problem; both of the quests will get you some mage xp, but this can't be a problem for the same reason stated above.
Dragon slayer: This quest will get you 18000 strength and defense xp. So, if you're going for 40 def, make sure that you have at least 19000 under your target xp (40 def is at 37224 xp).
Happy pking.
