Basics of Runescape

An introduction to the web based game of Runescape.

Runescape is a web based browser game played by thousands of people around the world. There are three basic paths to take, that of a mage, a warrior or an archer. Each has an advantage over one of the other classes and a disadvantage over the other. Think paper, scissor, rock.

The Mage can fry the warrior, while his flimsy mage dress is easily pierced by the archers arrow. While the archers arrows pierce mages, they bounce off the warriors armor. At the same time they are more likely to enhance the effects of magical attacks.

As well as the prime combat classes there are a myriad of skills such as woodcutting, fishing, mining, forging and cooking to learn. The skills are the true way to riches, as you are able to specialize and create items that are sought after by other players.

Many characters will play a mixture of the three combat classes, and in player vs player combat will switch their armor and means of attack depending on their opponent. Others completely ignore combat and focus on building up their skills, or working as a trader.

Trading is a dynamic part of the game, with an entire economy built up within the game based, as in real life, on supply and demand. The most successful traders have many suppliers, a huge list of customers and even separate websites to deal with their 'business'.

The beauty of Runescape is it's diversity. There is no single goal, winning is defined by the player, not the game. For some it is kills in the wilderness, for others it is trading successfully, for others completing one of the multiple quests.
