Basics of RuneScape Combat

Important information you need to know when it comes to combat in RuneScape.

Attack Basics

By clicking on the crossed sword icon, you'll be able to see which attack style you're using. You will also be able to switch between the different attack styles during combat. Each attack method is different, depending the weapon you are using. These attacks styles consist of accurate, aggressive, controlled, and defensive.

Below the attack style icons, you will also see a button that says Auto Retaliate. When this is on, you will automatically fight back if an opponent attacks you. If this option is off, then your character won't attack back unless you make him/her do so.

When you select an attack type, you'll gain experience in that combat skill when you cause damage to your enemy. Depending on what you are train, (attack, strength, defense) you get 4x exp for the damage you do to your foe. You will always earn Hitpoints experience (1.33x the damage you do on your foe).

Strength Basics

Strength is a very important combat skill, and probably the most favored one. It determines the max hit your character can do. With a high strength level and lots of strength-boosting gear, you can hit very high when you are in combat. High strength is a valuable skill used in Melee combat. The higher your Strength, the higher you will hit during combat. If you are a PKer (clan wars and bounty hunter), this skill is one of your vital skills. You also need high strength to wield certain objects. Each time you inflict one damage point on your foe, you will earn 4 Strength experience points. You can also use the "Controlled" method of some weapons to train all of your melee skills at once (attack, defense and strength) and earn 1.3 experience to each.

Defense Basics

Defense is a vital Combat skill. Many people do not care about raising their defense levels. Though it does not affect the damage you do to your opponent, it determines how often an opponent will hit you. Not only that, it allows you to equip better armor types. The different classes are Stab, Slash, Crush, Magic and Ranged. A higher defense level means a lower chance of opponents hitting you..
