Online Gaming and Real Life

My own take on gaming and how it can affect your real life.

With the power of the home computer and the ever expanding internet what we can do with a bit of spare time is astronomical. Everything form work and recreation we use the computer. This article focuses on of online MMORPGs and how they affect us and society.. The 6 billion people in the world each have their own unique personality and characteristics there are some who love the way they are and others who can't live with what they are in real life. With the power of the internet we all have the chance to create a whole new personality on the internet. And you could talk about almost anything there will be someone to listen. But I'm getting too detailed with this so I'll stop here and get back on topic now.

With the evolution of the internet came an evolution to gaming and one of those is the creation of MMORPGs. Some people saw the number of personalities on the internet and how they can be vastly different then their real selves. Obviously those people saw a potential to make money off of this. How? By creating a way for people to not only have a text based personality but have an image of themselves moving, talking, and doing a number of actions fighting against monsters, etc. They saw that if they could allow people to have an active portrayal of their “digital” personality that millions would go crazy over this and sign up for it, for the right price of course. The big drive around this is that there is no limit to what they could allow the players to do meaning that the market will expand constantly, as long as they continue to add new content.

A person's Internet personality could be anything they could want it to be and what they wish they could be in real life. In MMORPGs a person could be bigger, stronger, richer, etc. then everyone else around them yet in real life they could be working at a fast food restaurant and still live in their parent's basement (and I'm sure there are a few like that out there considering the millions of people on-line). They might not be able to physically do something in the real world but they can do it in an MMORPG if they find one that allows them to, and there usually is because there could be thousands of different ones all of them different in some ways. That is why they are so attractive to anyone, because they could be living out their dreams in the game but can't do it in real life, this means that as long as the developers of these stick to developing fantasy games they will always find a market somewhere.

But to the millions of players what do you really get in REAL life out of these games. The developers get your money if you pay to play them. Some waste hours on the in game “skills” or earning money in the game but can it be used in real life. The answer is no, some will argue that you could sell items for real money but for some games it is difficult or against the rules. Even if you found a consistent buyer the time you put into getting your virtual merchandise could have been spent on something more productive that could earn you more money. The point of my ranting here is to point out that wasting so much time on something that will never be truly worth anything. In my opinion online MMORPGs are a great way to show off to real world friends who also play the game or kill time if you happen to have some spare time. But I see no point in spending hours maybe days on end to get a virtual item, virtual money, or getting better at a virtual skill if you get no profits from them. But I do understand that there are those who can't take who they are in real life so they resort to becoming better in their virtual life but will you ever get any real gain from them or will you ever be recognized in any way in the real world by as many people as have recognized you virtually?

My last few words to make sure you understand something about this article is that once in a while ask yourself, “Will this help me in real life in any way, shape, or form?” I always keep that question in mind when I play.

And all this time the developers of the MMORPGs are earning lining their pockets with more and more of your money every day.
