A concept for an online game that unites MMO with RTS to allow each player to rule his own kingdom, and interact with other players on a nation-building level.
I am a man with an idea, which I want to be a reality. I want to see the production of the worlds first MMO real time strategy game. I am not particularly interested in design as a profession, I just want to play my game, so if this is produced you can do it without paying me anything, just put my name in the credits somewhere and keep me posted on your progress.
It would be a scifi game, with players playing across ten or more multi faceted spherical planets, built to include at least four hundred players per planet. Play would focus on one facet at a time, but be completely mobile, the edge of the map no longer being an issue, as a player's unit could march across it into another facet. With enough such facets there would be breathing room for new players, even as long time players have room to expand, and server updates can constantly add new worlds to be conquered. The one facet at a time view also makes it easy for newbies to conquer small territories while their powerful neighbors are busy elsewhere, and forces even powerful players to make alliances with several territories, so that they have someone to watch their backs. This has been a major defect in extant RTS games, the alliance system is not nearly useful enough, or employed often enough. A border patrol technology could let them know when new factions appear within their territories, or enter them.
Play would also include an in space battle component, space being set up on a grid of large cubes, with battle taking place in three dimensions. Players starfleets can be attacked from below and above as well as front back right and left. The controls for this would be difficult to create, but using the arrow keys (or others) to control vertical mouse movement it would be doable. Space travel is primarily through preexisting wormholes, as overspace treks are unrealistic, (although some civilizations might be able to research warp capabilities), which deliver you to the solar system of opposing planets, but not very near to the planets themselves, leaving sufficient room for space battles.
I would people each of these worlds with one or two or three of its own sentient races, each of which consists of ten or twelve tribes with their own particular abilities and technological capabilities, and each tribe can be further divided from others like it based on geographical bonuses and detriments, for example, a human germanic mountain tribe has increased HP based on mountain life, functions better in higher altitudes because of increased oxygen level tolerance, and has a particular skill for say, laser weapons production, and their people have higher morale because of nationalism based on their being germanic, but also do not get good ground unit movement speed, since tanks and such cannot be used in mountains. Needless to say, the differences between species must be immense, between tribes moderate, and between locales moderate, but changeable, in other words, as you conquer more territories, your units take on the characteristics of the place in which they are produced. Have fun with this, give one species the ability to fly, or to use telekinesis or mind control, or be extraordinarily fast. Units have an infinite life span, and players are only limited in population by what they can harvest and what they bother to build (see later note).
In terms of environment, keep it as realistic as possible. Cliffs, flowing water whose current affects ships travel, and can be used for hydroelectric power in proportion to its speed. Ice at the poles, tropics in the middle, resources spread realistically across. Make it so that a player can Kamikaze his units by jumping them off cliffs, or drowning them, so that sunken transports spit their units into the water, where they can swim for a period of time before they drown, and can be rescued or shot. Allow players to command their men to kill each other, and build the units so that they will act in their own defense, even against their allies and their own. Make them intelligent enough to refuse stupid orders once or twice before commiting suicide, to limit the distance they are willing to travel to get to an area so that they don't go traipsing around the world.
Make the citizens with a morale system that affects their performance, and so that if it drops too low, they will rebel and try to kill you, or take over as NPCs with a computer AI mind leading them. Make capital cities the head of the empire, so that if the capital is destroyed a percentage of your troops and citizens will rebel and join the attacker, based on morale. Make each planet with a different tilt on its axis, actually have seasons that affect play, and give the planets gravity that affects units travelling on other planets than their own, where light to heavy slows you down and weakens you, where vice versa makes you stronger and faster.
There is a game like this being developed right now. It is set in space, an entire galaxy in fact.
All I can say now is watch for it in the coming years!

Eve online is not exactly what he is describing. Eve is more build your own ship instead of build you own nation/empire. I am also looking for some game with similar features to what he describes. In fact, that is how I saw this post, by searching for a similar game.
