#2 Vaporize the game account
- Description: This tip is similar to #5 but it actually works, especially for a MMRPG game. What makes a MMRPG addictive is that you build up a character over many days/weeks. Once you realize that the game is just a grind, and you can get the nerve, then it is actually quite easy to go through the 5-10 steps necessary to delete your character - permanently. When you do this the feeling can be almost euphoric. In fact, if you are a MMRPG player and you have been hooked for a long time I definitely advise you try doing this. Don't think about the time that you've invested, which is already long gone, think about the time you will save in the future.
- Time Savings: It is a bit tough to calculate how much future time can be saved by deleting your MMRPG account. I for one have gone cold turkey and deleted all MMRPG accounts I've ever created. Furthermore, I have sworn off ever playing another MMRPG account. Given that I've already spent 1500hrs+ on MMRPG games in the past, I am probably easily saving 1500hrs+ of my time in the future.
#1 Get married, have kids
- Description: In my experience this is the ultimate solution. The best way to kick the gaming habit is to essentially get a life and find happiness in other ways. The nice thing about having a family is that they are the forcing function that you WILL make time for. You can't say no to a bunch of adorable little munchkins gnawing at your leg. You will still find some time to “game”, but it will be significantly reduced from anything else you've done.
- Time Savings: Families help you focus on the right things. My goals have been to spend 29hrs of my week's free time with my family, with the remaining <6hrs spent surfing, gaming etc. I haven't reached this goal “yet”… but I am getting closer each year. This is partially because of my will power, but also because the kids are getting bigger and much better at dragging me off the computer
So there you go, I have provided a list of the top 5 games I have found addictive, and 5 ideas on how you can curb, quell, or even squash game addiction in its tracks. I'm still looking for new and better ways to fight the computer addiction/gaming monster. If you happen to have better ideas please let me know!
