Dota - Critical Strikes

Guide to understanding critical strikes in dota.

Hi everyone, ever wonder is Mortred’s incredibly imba x4 crit is actually that imba? Is a higher percentage but a lower crit better than a lower percentage, but higher crit? All of these things will be answered to you in the next few paragraphs.

I am going to start by giving you the top 5 crits in the game. Ready? Here goes:

Standing at the most prestigious position in the critical strike area with a 36 % probability to hitting a x2 critical, I give you Blade Dance from Yurnero the Juggernaut! Yeah! This power is what makes Yurnero the Juggernaut he is! Giving him a times .72 available at full potential at level 7 this makes it number one in the game.  (DPS stands for damage per second)

You have seen this critical turn the tide of battles and even games! This massive clobbering powerhouse is the famous or infamous Coup de Grace from Mortred the Phantom Assassin. Plenty of you might think that this is actually the best crit in the game, but if you do the math this crit with its low 15% probability gives a lower dps boost at .6 even though a x4 critical is massive, I find a more balanced probability and crit ratio is preferable.

At number 3, this crit will surprise a few and make a few gap in surprise, with the lowest crit power in the game (except for Panda & Gondar who have an evasion with their low crits), but the highest crit probability, let me introduce you to Critical Strike from Slithice the Naga Sirene. Yup! Even a low 1.5x crit is ranked number three in the game, it is its 45% probability rate that makes it such a deadly weapon. You might be even more surprised to hear that this crit actually gives more dps than Mortred’s crit, this crit has .675 of additional dps opposed to Mortred’s .6. Why isn’t it in second position then? Simple, high probability has its down side a high probability kind of eliminates what crits are for, surprising your enemy with a huge amout of damage something that Mortred’s can fulfill better than this one. Thus the dps bonus is nullified and it is placed 3rd.

At number 4, it is a late game crit that make you shiver in fear when faced against, this uber carry hero crit can rival with the highest crits of the game. I give you King Leoric the Skeleton King’s times 2.75, 15 % critical strike, this crit is only a less effective version of Mortred’s crit which is, we should not forget, after all an ultimate, an ultimate whos true ability only shows at level 16. This crit on the other can offer almost the same crit hitting power at level 7 as Mortred’s level 11 critical strikes. This crit gives a dps bonus of .42, significantly lower than the other three but still respectable in its own way.

Number 5 is not an usual crit. This one comes from a bow with a weird name, weird shaped two… I give you the Buzika… Bukarizidoko… wait for it… Buriza-do-kuanon! In short BDK. This awesome critical strike item ( the other one item that gives a crit is part of this one’s recipe) gives 20% probability and 2.2 times critical. Giving it a .40 dps bonus. This weapon is stronger than Nessaj’s crit, which totally sucks.

Notes: A lot of people will say that buying a BDK on a hero that already has a crit will override its current crit. I say that’s a pack of lies. You can buy a BDK and it WILL stack to a certain extent with the hero’s crit. I saw a beyond Godlike PA going 22-7 with a BDK (all you saw was a black ball with red lines coming from it). Here is the math that shows how much more crit it gives, in this example I’m calculating with Mortred with level 3 ult:

Coup de Grace 15% x4

BDK 20% x2.2

20% x 15% = 3%

15% - 3% = 12% (if you get hit with both crits BDK will override the crit but there is only a 3% chance of that happening)

12% + 20% = 32%

Bottom line: You have more than doubled your chances of throwing crits at a small cost of (4-2.2)x2/3=1.2 times critical, your current dps bonus is .92.
