This guide is for the original Legend Of Zelda game that was first released on the NES Nintendo Entertainment System. The Legend Of Zelda was also released for the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console and the GameBoy advance. The game is identical to the original that was released for the NES.
When you start the game up you will see a cave towards the top of the screen. You'll want to go inside the cave. Inside is an old man who will give you your first sword. The sword he gives you is the wooden sword. Just walk into the sword an Link will pick it up. You are now ready to go into hyrule, with a weapon in hand.
Exit the cave and go east one screen. After you are on that screen you'll need to go north four screens. During this time you will encounter a lot of enemies. Use your sword to defeat them. The enemies shouldn't give you too much trouble. If you don't want to fight them, you don't have to. Just blaze through the screens until you see the bridge going west. Go to the bridge and go one screen west, and you'll see the first entrance to level one. This is the first dungeon in The Legend Of Zelda.
Enter in the doorway to the first level. Notice all the doorways that surround you. There will be a doorway on every wall. A door that goes east, one that goes west, and another door heading north. The doorway to the north is locked and requires a key to enter.
Go through the door that is in the east. In this room you'll see five Stalfos enemies. Use your sword to defeat them all. One of the Stalfos has a key. After you defeat the Stalfos that has the key, pick it up and exit the room.
You'll now be back in the entrance room. Now go through the west door. There will be three Keese bats. Defeat them all and get the key they leave behind after you defeat them all. Return to the entrance room and go through the locked door to the north.
In this room you'll see three Stalfos enemies. Destroy them all and pick up any rupies they leave behind. Go north into the next room. There will be five more Stalfos enemies and after you defeat them, a key will appear. Now go to the door that is heading east.
This room will have Keese bat enemies in it. Defeat all of the Keese. After you defeat all of the enemies, you'll see the compass appear. Grab the compass and head back in the last room you were just inside. By the way, the compass points out the location of the Triforce piece inside of the dungeon.
Now that your in the last room you were inside, head west. The room will be blocked off after you enter. The room is full of Keese bats and you'll need to destroy them all. Unlock the door that is north. This room will have Gel enemies and a block in the middle. Destroy all of the Gel enemies and stand on the right side of the block. Push this block to the left. The door that is to the west will now open up.
Inside of this secret room, you'll see an old man who says "Eastmost Peninsula is the secret". This gives you a clue as you go further into the dungeon.
Go back into the previous room. Go through the door that is east. You'll find more Gel enemies inside of this room. Be sure you get the map that is on the right side of the room. With the map, you'll be able to see every room that is inside of level one. From this room, you will need to head north.
You'll find three Stalfos enemies inside. Destroy them all and get the key they leave behind. Unlock the door that is to the north. In this room you'll encounter three Goriya enemies. These enemies can throw boomerangs at any time, so be very careful. Kill all three enemies and get the key they leave behind. Go through the locked door that is west.
Inside of this room are fast moving blades that sit against the walls. Be very careful and make your way to the far west side of the room. There are blocks surrounded by a staircase in the center. You'll need to push the furthest block west that is sticking out. Push up or down on the block to gain entrance to the stairway.
You'll enter a basement type area with bats in it. Defeat the bats and get the bow. You will now have a bow, but you can't use it until later in the game when you get arrows. Get it now so you won't have to come back and get it. Now, go out of the basement and head back into the room with blocks and blades.
Go to the next east room, south two rooms and you will be in the room where you got the map. Go through the locked door to the east. There will be three more Goriya enemies inside of this room. Destroy them all and you'll get another treasure, the boomerang. Pick it up and it will automatically become your second weapon. The boomerang can be used to defeat some enemies and stun others. Use the boomerang to stun an enemy, and then attack the enemy with your sword.
Go through the door to the east. Inside will be the legendary hand enemies, the Wallmasters. Make sure these hands don't pick you up. These hands were also in The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time. If one of the hands pick you up, you will be sent all the way back to the beginning of the level.
Get the key inside of the room that is south west. Go through the unlocked door to the north. In this room is the first boss, Aquamentus. If your hearts are filled up, simply use your flying swords at him to defeat him. If you don't have flying swords, wait until he fires energy blasts at you, and they quickly go up to him and strike him once. After you strike him, run back away to the far side of the room to get away.
Each time he blasts energy at you, avoid the blast, and quickly go up to him and strike him with your sword. After a few rounds, Aquamentus will be defeated. Pick up the heart container and head into the next room to the east. Inside, you'll find the first piece of triforce. After you pick it up, you'll be sent back outside to the entrance of Level one. You've now completed the first level in The Legend Of Zelda.
