Many gamers have played the big hit game, Super Smash Brothers. The First of its sequel was released in 1994 for the Nintendo 64 console, managing a big hit back then. The first title consisted of 12 playable characters, including famous Nintendo heroes such as Mario and Link. The next in the series, Super Smash Brothers Melee, otherwise known as Super Smash Brothers DX in Japan, was a bigger success. It consisted of 26 characters, almost doubled from the original, and very fast pace for advanced players. Finally, in 2008 Super Smash Brothers Brawl was released. One of the best games for the Wii console, it was a huge success, and consisted of 30+ characters.
NDS
The NDS, formally known as the Nintendo DS (Double Screen), is the newest hand held console from Nintendo. It has two screens, the bottom screen being a touch screen. Many games utilize the touch screen fully, giving unique game play. Many Super Smash fans requested and dreamed for a DS Super Smash Brothers. We don't know yet if Nintendo will ever create one, but I doubt it. There are many problems considering a DS Super Smash Brothers game.
The Problems
- One of the biggest problems with SSB going to the DS is that, all the SSB games so far have been in 3D. Although the DS has 3D capabilities, it is very limited, and it doesn't look very good as it is very pixilated, which is when you can see each pixel, and the characters/textures look blocky. Like many SSB clones, they have the option to go 2D, but that won't be very good, because not only will the trend go away, but since SSB is a very physics oriented game, making it 2D will change a lot of things. Lastly, the screen size is quite small, so the 3D models or 2D sprites will need to also be small, considering that the camera can zoom in and out as it does in all the SSB series.
- Another thing to consider is size. If a DS SSB is going to come out, and it is going to be 3D, and it has 10-20+ characters, the size will be considerably huge. The Nintendo DS cards so far holds up to 256MB, which may or may not be enough. If they use sprites instead, this may not be a problem though
- I think as a hardcore SSB player, this will be the biggest problem. The controls. What we use in Brawl and Melee, the Game Cube controller has 8 buttons, the C-Stick, D-Pad and Analog Stick. On the other hand, the Nintendo DS has 7 Buttons and a touch screen. Now doing a lot of the movements on the touch screen will be very awkward, and frustrating. A lot of the ATs or Advanced Techniques will be UN doable as well considering the button positions.
The Pros
Now lets go into the bright side. Having SSB on the DS will mean that it is more portable; we can bring it anywhere and enjoy it anytime. Probably the most notable feature will be Multiplayer, or even wifi to play with friends from home. The touch screen may be utilized for some unique actions. But that's all I can think of.
SSB on the DS
Finally I get to this section... So, I'm guessing most of you who is reading this looked into this because you were wondering if there will be a Super Smash Brothers for the DS. As far as I and other know, other than people in Nintendo, They will not make a SSB for the DS. But!!! All hope is not lost. There are many Homebrew Programmers who are making SSB clones. Homebrew is a game or application that can be run on"modded" hardware.
If you happen to have a Flash cart, a device for the DS which allows you to run homebrew as well as play games, listen to music and watch videos, You can try out a few out there. The one I thought is going pretty well is a clone called "Super Smash Brothers RUMBLE". I tried it out myself, and I have to say it was quite nice. Since it was still a demo, and not a complete game, there were many bugs, but if they ever finish it, I'm sure it will be one of the best homebrew games.
First of all, thanks for reading this far. I know I have written a lot, and possibly half the things I wrote here, you can careless about. For all us Super Smash Brothers fan, lets just hope that they come out with an official SSB game for the DS. Till then we will need to just hope and hope. Thank you again, let SSB live on!!
