High Quality Monk in Neverwinter Nights 2

How to create a high quality monk in Neverwinter Nights 2? How to develop abilities, skills and feats as a monk?

In Neverwinter night 2, just like any other role playing games, character development is very important. In this article, we will talk about how to create a high quality monk. What race you should choose, what alignment you should choose, how to ditribute your ability and skill points, and what kind of feats you should take.

Race

Human is a good candidate to become a monk. Human have bonus feat and additional skill point in the first level.

Drow is also a good candidate to become a monk. Beside because of their statistics, drow able to see invisible enemies with their racial spell. Monk is usually a stelthy character, a drow monk always have their search mode active without reducing their movement speed. A drow also have natural spell resistance that furthermore can be combined with natural spell resistance granted by the monk class.

Beside human and drow all races that focus their statistic to dexterity such as gnome, can be apotential monk.

Multiclassing

None. Monk is the only class in the game that will fight better with unarmed strike than using any weapon. So I really suggest you to continue as a monk and avoid multi classing.

Alignment

As a follower and spiritual leader of certain gods, a monk shuld be lawful. Monk’s alignment can be lawful good, lawful neutral or lawful evil. To avoid your alignment become non lawful, do not cheat, lie or pick pocket during the game.

Ability Scores

Listed below are the basic ability that you should get in the first level, and those you should achieve in level 20.

Basic Abilities:
Str 14 +2
Dex 15 +2
Con 12 +1
Int 12 +1
Wis 14 +2
Cha 10 0

Level 20 Abilities:
Str 14 +2
Dex 20 +5
Con 12 +1
Int 12 +1
Wis 14 +2
Cha 10 0

A monk doesn’t need high strength because they have potential to do more damage than any base weapon. The most important abilities for a monk is dexterity. Dexterity can increase monk’s AC and it also help a monk to strengthen their attack (you will also need weapon finesse).

Wisdom is not to important for a monk unless you want higher saves. Put it about 14 to get extra 2 will saves points. Once you get to level 20, you will not need will saves anymore.

Intellegence is not very important depending on the skills you want. So if you don’t want to be a stealthy character, you can drop 2 points of intellegence and boost your constitution. With 14 points of constitution you will get 10HP/level, which is enough.

Skills

These are the skills that can be important for a monk: Concentration, hide, listen, move silently, spot, tumble.

If you not desire a stealthy character you can replace hide and move silently skills. As alternatives you may instead choose to focus on craft alchemy, diplomacy or lore. A monk will not need to parry so do not waste your skill points into parry.

Concetration is usually a class skill for a spell caster but you will notice that some feats such as empty body and wholeness of body are treated as spells.

Feats

Listed below are feats that you should take during the game:

Dodge, mobility, weapon finesse, circle kick, spring attack, weapon focus (unarmed strike), improve critical (unarmed strike), power critical (unarmed strike).

Dodge and mobility usually will become irrelevant once you can maximize your tumble ( more than 14 points). But unfortunately a monk will only get +1 AC for every 10 points of tumble instead of 5. Monk’s AC is only increase +1 for every 5 levels which is too slow. So for a monk, dodge and mobility is still useful. Dodge and mobility will give you +1 AC for current enemy you are fighting and mobility give additional +4 AC againts attack of opportunity.

If you want to focus more on melee fighting, and already boots your constitution points, you can replace dodge and mobility with other options such as power attack, cleave and great cleave.

Free Feats

The best thing of being a monk is, a monk will get ton of free feats. Some of the are very useful and help alot. Listed below are the most important feats that will be received by a monk.

Evasion and improve evasion the ability to deflect arrows. Because monk’s AC and HP is not very good, be able to deflect arrow before they hit you can be a life saver.

Disease and poison immunity the best thing of these feats is they can save more time. That’s mean you can use another equipment freely rather than antidote etc.

Spell resistance can be a good additional arsenal againts spell caster.

Empty body 50% concealment

simple but enough to prevent someone going on the wrong path thanks

It is worth to note that wisdom not only gives you higher saves as a monk, but also improves your AC and the DC on stunning fist and quivering palm.

Wisdom is just as important as Dexterity for Monks -- it's one of their key stats!

Not sure how the article's author missed this...

Circle kick is not a good feat in the current implementation of NWN2, I don't see how the author can recommend it.
(It keeps switching your monk's target, so it prevents you from focusing your damage on a single target.)

That's because the author doesn't really know what he's doing.

very very weak monk build if you ask me. You can still multiclass monk with some other classes that can grant nice benefits. Like add 4 ftr lvls for even more feats and 1 more attack each round. And combine this with improved flurry of blows and you will spit out numbers of unarmed attacks.

Sorry mate, but this article is really a waste of space.

I have an Aasimar monk and I am just flying through, don't see how he didn't put planetouched in there, the game has been fairly easy.

I stopped reading as soon as he wrote that wisdom was not important to monks.. I mean seriously.. how can I follow a monk guide that says something silly like that.

Go easy on him. Some comments are true. Wisdom is overrated for monks for a variety of reasons. Firstly, points in strength adds to your chance to hit and your damage. Secondly, the AC bonus from Wisdom is unnecessary since Monk\'s invariably end up with a great AC towards the end of the game anyway. Wisdom 14 is all a monk needs.

I don\'t like the feat choices. Since tumble is always going to be maxed, getting mobility and spring attack is a waste of time.
As for the comment about the Aasimar monk, I can see why he didn\'t put it in because of the +1 level adjustment. Monk\'s get one of their best bonuses at lvl 20 and Aasimar monks don\'t get it because of their level adjustment.

I like how NWN2 was listed in ACTION GAME catagory.

Yeah wisdom is needed for the monk’s abilities and to get a better armour class. And the monk’s epic feats need high wisdom. I believe that mostly multyclassing a monk is a bad idea, unless to become a sacred fist but monks get all the skills a warrior needs anyway.

why raise your spot skill?

As stated previously, Wisdom is generally overrated for monks - especially in CRPGs. In pen and paper, a high wisdom is considerably more useful than the fight-rest-repeat world of NWN2. Dexterity will ultimately be your more important stat as it increases your AC just the same as wisdom does, allows Weapon Finesse to improve your fighting in a huge way, and really, who uses Quivering Punch or Stunning Fist all that often?

Maybe I would do better if I did, but I just can't be bothered.

Anyway, my suggestions for race would be either Human or Shield Dwarf. Human for obvious reasons (the +1 skill point/level is actually really useful), Shield Dwarf for the +2 strength, no negatives to anything important (aka CHA). Choose skills based on your play style - personally, I have no use for stealth, it takes too bloody long. The only real exception would be if you wanted to make a Monk/Assassin - could be a lethal combo. I also suggest leveling Tumble to 20 and then putting your skill points elsewhere. Sure, you COULD level it to 27, but then you end up getting 3 skill points that are basically useless.

For feats, I suggest taking spring attack, because Tumble rolls can still critically fail, and who knows, it could happen when you're in some serious danger. Could ruin your day. Tumble, IMHO, is only really useful for the AC bonus. After level 20, you can go a couple of routes. I suggest Rogue or Fighter, depending on how you've built your characters skills thus far. With rogue, you get some pretty awesome sneak attack stuff, not to mention an influx of skill points (Use Magic Device, anyone?), which isn't half bad. With fighter, though, you get more feats, more HP, and all the ladies. Ok, ok, 2 out of 3 ain't bad, I guess. You also get more attacks...or maybe I'm just imagining things. I haven't really finished building my character through lvl 30 yet, so I dunno.

On the equipment side, I would highly recommend Boots of Shifting Sand (Permanent Haste...yes, I'm a disgusting Power Gamer) and whatever the armor (or clothing, belt, etc - I know wearing armor is retarded) is that negates sneak attacks and criticals. With my build, at least so far, AC is approaching ridiculous levels, and most attacks only land when they're criticals. If they can't crit on me, and they can't hit me...well, I'll leave it at that.
