The game is as much similar to the previous editions, but with slight upgradations here and there to pick the interest of the gamer. The weapons unseen in the last edition can be seen this time on the screen, weapons not in use will be hung on the back of the player; weapons are much more powerful, sleek and sophisticated. There are some support weapons available in Halo 3 which is huge and powerful, need two hands to handle them. A new set of usable things called equipment make an entry in Halo 3, the typical functions being regeneration of the shield, defensive screens among others. Halo 3 introduced new vehicles this time to be used by the player for more flexibility and enjoyment. The usage is a bit limited in the multi-player version due to some balance concerns. All the advancements in the weapons, vehicles, and the equipment give the player much fire power and other options, but they limit the combat options of the player.

The game has nine levels in all, after which the three editions come to an ending. Xbox live can be used to play online with friends or other players co-operatively. The previous installments had an identical Spartan, this time around there will be a distinction in the Halo 3, first player gets to play Master chief, second one the Arbiter, the remaining two don the roles of freshly created Elites. All the four players have similar talents to showcase, but with unique arsenal.

Meta-game is a "campaign scoring mode" featured in Halo 3, and welcomes a competitive spirit among co-operating players. As usual is the case of awarding points for eradicating enemies, there are some bonuses in Halo 3. Extra points are presented with when enemies are eliminated in multiples and some more if done swiftly, when there are some stylish and sleek movements while getting rid of the enemies. Sometimes points will be reduced for killing a team-mate or a co-operative player. There are hidden golden and silver skulls, when activated gives the opponents extra power and health, which in turn makes the level more difficult, thereby increasing the score. Score will be multiplied for high pace of completion of the level.
