When sitting at my desk preparing to write my next article, my fourteen year-old son stated that I should write about Halo 3. When I asked him why I should do that, he informed me that it was a “totally awesome” game. So I began to ask him a couple of questions to see if he really had any backing for his statement.
I started off with some basic questions about the game, as I really didn't have a clue about the details of it. The only things I knew were that it was a “totally awesome” game and that it was released in 2007.
He began to educate me on the wonders of this game. I posed this question “Didn't this game come out in 2007”? He responded affirmatively and so my next question was “What about the newer games that have come out since then. Has nothing topped Halo 3 yet?” His answer was an emphatic “no”.
For those of you that haven't bought or rented the game yet, and for those of you who have and are still interested in finding out more, we're going to delve into all the pertinent facts as presented by my in-home game professional.
“Randall, what do you like about the game?”
1)“There are lots of futuristic weapons”, he responds. (Of course this would be his first and most favorite aspect of the game).
I asked him to expound a little further on the “humans” or the “good guys” in the game before we get into the weaponry: “The humans are lead by Master Chief, John Spartan 117. He is an augmented human and the last of the super soldiers. Humans and Elites, which are alien life-forms, join forces against the other aliens. Most of the time you are fighting, you have the Arbiter on your side. The Arbiter is the main fighting elite.”
So now that I know more about the good guys, we'll jump into the weaponry. Following is the list of weapons, which is broken down between Humans and Aliens.
Human Weapons:
- MA5C Assault Rifles
- BR 55 Battle Rifles
- M 90 Shotgun
- M41 Rocket Launcher
- M6G Pistol
- Spartan Laser
- SRS99D Sniper Rifle
- M7 SMG - Sub Machine Gun
- Turret
- Rocket Launcher mounted on Turret
Alien Weapons:
- Plasma Rifle
- Plasma Pistol
- Carbine
- Particle Beam Rifle
- Needler
- Brute Spike Rifle - this is Randall's favorite weapon of the game “it's totally awesome”
- Brute Shot
- Gravity Hammer
- Mauler
- Energy Sword
- Fuel Rod Cannon
- Plasma Turret
2) “The game has Cool Aliens”
- Elites - the “good aliens” that help the humans
- Jackals - bird-like creatures. Some carry energy shields.
- Brutes - ape-like creatures
- Hunters -huge creatures that carry a plasma cannon mounted on arm
- Grunts - short and ugly creatures that are fun to kill
- Prophets - appear very rarely in the game
- Flood - An infection
- Drones - Bug-like aliens
3) “Cool vehicles”
This again, is broken down between Human and Alien vehicles for your reading pleasure.
Human Vehicles:
- Warthog
- Gauss Warthog
- Scorpion Tank
- Mongoose
- Pelican -crew ship that carries reinforcements
- Hornet
Alien vehicles:
- Ghost
- Banshee (Scepter)
- Wraith
- Chopper
- Ski vehicle
- Phantom
4)“It has excellent graphics. Everything looks realistic, especially the videos in-between missions. The people talking look real”.
5)“Excellent Missions”. He couldn't really give me specifics in this category. Nevertheless, he had many things to discuss with me pertaining to this topic. He started rambling on about how you could shoot this particular alien, with this particular gun and it was really cool when the alien got killed, the amazing sound effects, etc. My summary of this discussion is: Each mission has its own cool way to kill an alien.
6) Additional miscellaneous cool information as provided by the game guru:
- There are different Levels to complete
- The different Levels are challenging in a fun way
- The average time to complete a level is 30 minutes to an hour
- Head shots kill faster than body shots
- Cool weapon sound effects
- Once you get started playing, you won't want to stop
Game rating on a scale from 1 to 10: Game gets a 9.5 rating.
“Why the 9.5 and not a 10 rating?”
“Some missions are very difficult and in my opinion, I hate fighting Flood. Flood is like an infection. They start out as little pods and infect dead bodies of aliens and humans and they're super strong and they're fast. The largest of the Flood can transform into a crab-like creature that can climb on walls and shoots its own self-made spikes.”
Would you recommend this game to others?
“Yes, but only teens and up because there is a lot of blood and alien guts and the Flood is very gross-looking. There is also some bad language. The game rating is “M””.
Thanks to my game professional we now have the inside look of Halo 3 from a teenage perspective. Yes, Halo 3 has been out for awhile now but kudos to the publisher, Microsoft Game Studios, for developing a smash hit game that keeps the kids coming back for more.
