GunZ: Are You Really Playing?

Do you really think you have control on what you are doing when you play GunZ?

GunZ is a Massive Multiplayer Online 3d action with elements of RPG. In there you can fight other players using standard 3d action controls (WASD for movement, mouse for targeting and shooting e.t.c.) However, in this game you gain experience (XP) and money (called bounty in the game) for killing opponents.

You can spend money on buying better weapons (swords, daggers, pistols, machine guns, rocket launchers…) and armor, just like in an ordinary RPG. For getting XP you level up, which is needed to acquire new weapons and armor. This also makes GunZ more like an RPG. GunZ itself is a great and enjoyable game, but there is something, that I think, can make it really boring.

You see, every game has a couple of bugs and glitches and every game will have some players who will try to use them to get an advantage.

For example: In GunZ, if you jump to a wall and then press the jump button again, you will jump off it. It's not a bug, the game itself is very acrobatic, but the bug is that, if you attack with the sword while being in mid-air after that “jump-off-the-wall”, then you will be able to jump off it again, if you do this still in mid-air. GunZ features many of bugs like this, and most of players use them. The bad thing I see in it is this:

To enable the glitch you must: Fast, press SPACE, then up twice, then hold left mouse button, then scroll the middle button, then press up twice again. This may seem too hard, but many people have learned to do this fast and automatically.

But that's the problem! They just press a key combination very fast and that's it. It requires no thinking, no skills, just pressing these buttons like a robot! How enjoyable would be a game, where your objective is to press the same sequence of buttons all the time? That would not be you, who plays this game, that would be this sequence. You would have no freedom to do anything, just pushing these buttons all the time, like a mindless zombie or something.

Oh, by the way about being mindless, sometimes people try to put a trap on you, like running behind a corner and waiting there to deliver a sudden attack. I don't know about others, but that never works at me. First, this trick is sooooo old, and second, I can see a light from a charging super-attack, or a hand, always sticking from that corner.

Maybe people know that this won't work, maybe they see that I've discovered them, but they keep on waiting, because they've read about it in a good tutorial, or just were beaten by it at least once. The fact is, that they have no control, like in the case of previously mentioned bug using. Your opponent is an old trick, not a player. And in most times there are easy ways not to fail on it, because if you know, it's a trap, in most cases it's not a trap anymore.

I don't think that it is too interesting or enjoyable to either play the game, without really controlling anything, or facing such opponent. So, my advice for all the gamers is: Do not use some styles or techniques - develop your own! At least if you want to be the one who plays.

Well, about the whole robot thing. The thing that makes gunz fun is not that you have to push all the buttons like a robot. Its that eventually every player hits a point were they cant push buttons faster. The game wont let them. Suddenly, gunz turns from 'robot button pushing' to 'chess online'. In the higher levels, its not the person who can pull off the most in a row the fasts, its the person that can out think the enemy that wins. Thus gunz is fun. Not because you button mash, but because you think.
