After the craze of fighting games being Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, others tried to imitate and get in on that cash cow. However, there is one that does stand out in being different than others to a degree and that would be none other than a game probably very few has heard of being FX Fighter. It is only for DOS and no other console picked up on it. When 3D was starting to take form in gaming, this was perhaps maybe one of the 1st fighter games to move into the 3rd Dimension. Any move like that at the time would be considered risky as you never knew if the game would be a hit with the audience.
Much like any fighting game, each character has their own ending but the game has a simple story. There is this fighter named Rygil that has put a challenge out to anyone in a battle to see which planet survives. That is the story mode and the name of the game is to win and keep your planet alive. It’s a bit of a different concept, as you would never think the fate of your planet would be determined in that situation. For that, it is a plus for being different.
Unlike other fighting games at the time, this one took upon a theme of Survival of the Fittest. Only the strong survive and the weak shall perish. There were three ways to win the round. You could either knock them out, have more energy if you are running on a time limit, and of course knocking them out of the ring. That one is a good one to use if you are running low on energy and want to knock them out and be the winner despite your opponent having more energy.
Controls for the game aren’t hard to get used to but you can customize them to your liking. It probably is capable of using a controller and may be easier that way. There are combo moves and that have to be executed a certain way much like any fighting game.
Graphics wise was good for the time but today’s standards are more realistic so it wouldn’t pass on that level. In fact, it may be able to rival that of at the minimum Super Nintendo but more so in the Era with the N64, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation mainly because that is where the game would fit best at.
Story is pretty simple and goes to the old theory of Survival of the Fittest. It worked for the game and that’s all you can honestly about it.
Overall, FX Fighter was decent and probably could have been ported over to consoles. I think it was going to happen but probably a dispute happened and it never came to past. Who knows if it would have been a huge hit in the console division. I cannot say it would be but it could have had its own audience.
