Because I'm not really one for multi-player games, I only played the Single-Player campaign. On Veteran. I must say, it was definitely harder than the first game, because of AI increases and all that jazz. Anyway, after the completion of the first mission, which I found to be only a prologue (Who would have known?), I was about a second away from having a seizure.
To me, it felt like I was actually in the game. The heart-pounding ending to the first mission left me sitting crouched in a corner sucking my thumb, saying "God....Damn...." Every 5 seconds. It was that grand.
As I played through the game, it just got more intense, the fighting got harder (Veteran), and the levels got longer and longer. Oh, and before I forget, you know those little quotes that come up every time you die? I've read every one. Every. Single. One. At a part where a helicopter has pinned you down, I died so many times, I nearly cried when I made it to the next part. The Heartbreaking/Epic/Amazing/Sequel-Needy ending didn't help.
In Call of Duty 4, you play as 2 different sides, just like the other games, the stealthy British SAS, and the gung-ho American Marines. Each side has their ups and downs.
British SAS
The SAS are silent, quick, and accurate when it comes to doing what they do. The only problem, is that they don't have the firepower to take on the massive hordes that come your way in some of their missions. Also, they need serious motivation to leave their little hiding spots. You have to either flush them out with grenades, or be brave and trudge onward on your own. Also, Your teammates cannot die. Don't you find that a bit weird?
American Marines
The Marines are tough. These guys are squads of soldiers that can die, but once one person dies, one comes to take his place. I mourn for the families of the fallen soldiers. Anyway, You are Sgt. Paul Jackson, and you and your squad are looking for the man behind this war, Al-Asad. As you and your squads venture through the desert cities, toward where Al-Asad is believed to be hiding, you face many different problems. A tank stuck in a bog, a radio station filled with enemies, clearing the way for that tank. It all leads up for the end of the Marine Campaign, where a nuclear explosion goes off in the middle of the city, killing most of the Marines.
Call of Duty 4 - Good
- AI increase
- Heart-Pounding scenes
- Plenty of Ammo
- No health bar/med-kits
- Great Graphics
- Fun Mission where you are in an AC-130. Death from above.
- Great ties to real life
Call of Duty 4 - Bad
- Too Short
- Your teammates don't move forward unless you do
- Grenades, Exploding Cars, and Barrels
- Infinitely re-spawning enemies. No sniping on hard levels
- Rocket Launchers are horrible
- Timed missions. Second to last mission, if you die, you are sent back 10 minutes or so
