The army claims that their video game America's Army Operations is not a recruiting tool. I post the facts, you make the decision.
Training
In order to even start to play the game online you have to complete some “Basic Training” missions. If this were any other game you could say that is just used to familiarize the players with the controls. But here is the difference; they follow almost the exact rules given to people actually in basic training. First off, you have to qualify as a riflemen by shooting at 40 targets; 23-29 hit, you are a “Marksmen,” 30-35 hit, you are a “Sharpshooter,” 36-40 hit, you are an “Expert.” It is Interesting that they would use the same standards. Are they trying to prepare future recruits for their training?
Realism
Weapons can jam in this game. When you press your “Fix Jam” key the animations on the screen are exactly what you would have to do in order to clear a jammed weapon. Because of this game I know exactly how to reload an M4, an M16, a SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon), an M203 Grenade launcher, and many more weapons. Is this more pre-training here?
Friends
My friends and I have played this game since we were in our Freshman year in high school, that was 2002. Out of a group of 10 of us, 8 joined either the Army or Marine Corps. Coincidence?
