The Nintendo Wii, the latest addition to the Nintendo tradition is finally on the shelves. It was on somewhat short supply on release day, but nothing compared to the PS3 nightmare. It is said to be one of the most innovative consoles ever created.
As with any other console accessories are important, and are mostly not included with your console. Here I have a few recommendations to enhance the enjoyment of your Wii.
Controllers
As any other console, it only comes with one controller, or should I say one set, a Wiimote and a Nunchuck. Obviously to play a multiplayer game you will need to pick up at least another set.
GameCube (GC) games can only be played using GC controllers. If you already owned a GC then you are in luck, if not, you will need some of those as well. Nintendo is planning on a Wii controller that would allow these games to be played, but is not on the shelves as of yet.
Memory
The unit comes with 512 MB of internal memory, but if that is not enough, an SD memory card can be used. Nintendo makes them, but there are many other brands out there that will work. I purchased a base that has room for the controllers (unlike the base that comes with the console) and it came with a card included.
The GC games will not be able to use the internal, nor the SD card memory to save progress. A GC memory card must be used for these games. Once again if you owned a GC you are in luck, otherwise you will need at least one of these.
Virtual Console
To enjoy the Virtual Console you will need wireless internet access through a router, or an internet capable computer with an available USB port. This will allow access to the console as well as Wii channels, and eventually, the internet. You will also need Wii points to purchase games for the Virtual Console. These can be purchased at any retailer as a prepaid card. You can also use your credit card when purchasing through the online store, bypassing the need for a prepaid card. The exchange rate is right around 100 points per dollar and the games are around 500-1000 points each.
Enjoy
These are by no means all the available accessories for the Wii, but will definitely enhance your playtime. Have fun, and play safe.
