It was 1986 and Nintendo had total control over the home video game universe, sure there was a couple of consoles out there that know one had ever herd of, but Nintendo controlled all with there arsenal of the best home console games out there. They had super Mario brothers, Metroid and Zelda; it seemed as if no one had a chance to get even a small share of the home console market, but the good times would not last for Nintendo. June 1986, Sega hits the market hard with there first American console, the Sega Master System, thou they had little money to pay for a decent advertising campaign, the Sega master system sold slightly above what it was projected to sell.
Sega seeing money in there eyes decided to push a little harder they decided to start selling the system with one of there top games bundled with it (Alex Kidd in miracle world) which made the console sell even better. One advantage Sega had over the Nintendo is that a lot of gamers of the time thought that Nintendo had gotten stale and that they no longer had the ability to produce any good games, this was also complicated by the fact that most of Nintendo's games where games from third party publishers that had the Nintendo seal of quality on them, and people new that that seal of Quality meant nothing as gamers where bombarded with lame game after lame game. Sega was producing there own games meaning that they had almost total quality control over the games that where made for there system.
Buy December Nintendo finally thought that the Sega master system may be a threat to there empire, so they launched an endless supply of attack ads against Sega, and lowered the prices of there console, accessories, and games right in time for Christmas. And to make sure that the master system was totally powerless to fight back they made a few retailers that where caring the master system and NES that they would pull all there items of the shelf's if they didn't stop selling master systems and other Sega items. It wasn't long after that that the master system was completely out of gamer's minds and Nintendo had regained control of the gaming universe. (Or had they?)
Its know 1989 and Sega's back with a vengeance. They flooded the gaming world with advertisements for there new 16-bit console, the genesis everyone wanted one no one new what it could do and it looked like Sega finally had a way to defeat Nintendo. It was good, it was fast, it had sonic, but lurking in the shadows of this monolithic achievement in gaming history was the far superior console, the SNES. The day the SNES came out Sega was doomed. They tried to redeem themselves with add-ons to the genesis like the 32x or the Sega CD-drive, but it was al over Sega tried to put out new consoles, but no matter how hard they tried they where doomed to the most humiliating and disgraceful defeat any home video game console company could have. They stay in business now days by making games for Nintendo a sad fate for such a great company.
