Sonic Games

Sonic games and how they have changed.

As everyone know Sonic is the Blue hedgehog that we have come to know and love but have you seen how his games are changing. Ever since the release of the first sonic game the series has been changing and molding into what it is now. Since it boasted great popularity as soon as it came out its a no brainer as to why Sonic and the crew is Sega's Main mascot.

The beginning of the series and its changes

Now since the first game the series has changed from STH2 he got his spindash ability which is a skill most of us use to get out of sticky situations. Then is STH3 and S&K Sonic got the ability to use some special shields and players who could actually time it right were able to dodge some crazy obstacles by pressing jump twice. Where as tails was granted the ability to fly and knuckles got to climb on walls. Also STH2 gave players skilled enough to get the chaos emeralds the opportunity to go super. Also in order to activate super sonic you had to get 50 rings and had to jump. When STH3 is hooked on to S&K you could get another set of emeralds and got the abillity to go hyper. Well tails was finally then able to go super. Tails has never gone hyper (dangit DX). After that sonic moved into the 3-D world after Sonic-CD.There was Sonic 3-D blast and then there was sonic saturn jam which they had pretty much had the same qualities of STH2 and STH3 except they were 3-D. Then came Sonic Adventure and SA2. These games were really fast paced 3-D platformers alot faster than the saturn game. They also boasted new characters such as Big The Cat, Gamma (a robot made by Eggman) with Chaos and Tikal. Shadow came in at Sonic adventure 2. They also had the chao gardens which allowed you to raise chao to compete against each other off and online. I dont know if that was an option in SA2 but in the Sonic adventure you were allowed to on the dreamcast.

The Advanced Age

Now we come to the sonic advance titles. These games went back to the same 2-D/CG style seen in the genesis games. The advanced series offered faster gameplay and the abillity to perform tricks and home in if you were close enough with sonic. There were 3 games in all, all distinctly titled Sonic advance and a number according to which one it was. Mainly thats all it offered really that and rail grinding and the ability to get higher by pressing the r button on your advance. It was a spectacle to behold though. In SAdv3 you had to work with a partner. According to who you chose determined their abilities. I wont go into those if you want to know what they were than check GameFAQS.com. These games also had the chao garden feature and allowed you to transfer chao between your game cube and GBA and allowed you to get some very special chao such as the jewel and metallic chao that everyone loves. They were really great games that true sonic fans would enjoy.

Gamecube/DS and on up

the remaining games in the series

Starting off with... you guessed it Sonic heroes. It was like Sadv3 but you already had a predetermined team of characters and each team had the same abilities. This game did not have the chao garden so GBA to Gamecube as far as sonic games go ceased which is sad. Next we have Shadow The hedgehog. It might not have a whole lot of sonic but by definition it is a sonic game. Basically sega gave you shadow and a whole lot of guns and weapons. Plus the ability to use chaos powers which basically made gameplay more enticing to the eye. ShTH was a fun game that gave shadow a lot more depth and makes his story more understandable. Now comes Sonic Rush (in the middle of playing) basically its like sonic advance but it has 3-D Sprites and 3-D segments also 3-D boss battles. The gameplay is exciting and even more fast paced plus the abillity to boost as long as you have some power in your tension gauge. Plus the addition of yet another character Blaze cat. As her name implies shes one fiery feline. Each time she jumps shes engulfed in fire and had pretty much the same abilities as sonic. The game is fun and incorporates 2 screens which shifting is challenging but fun. The special stages are also fun so long as you can find the gimmick to get into it. You use your stylus and move sonic around in a special stage that is much like STH2's special stage setup. By moving and touching the screen you are able to collect rings and run through the suprisingly challeging stages. Killing enemies and dodging those oh so familiar spike balls you should have enough fun to make you scream for more or scream in frustration trying to get those emeralds. As far as other games go I wont comment on those because I have not yet been able to experience them but they look like interesting spectacles of the series in which i hope to experience.
