It has become apparent in the video game world that the PlayStation is the punching bag of the entire video game industry. Currently, it sits dead last behind the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. The question is how in the world could this have happened to Sony after dominating so easily with the PlayStation 2? I'm going to look at a few possible reasons why they have fallen down so flat on their face. Before anybody who comes in calling the PlayStation 3 the best system, it's not saying the system is horrible, it's just not performing up to the level it was expected to be.
Money: With prices rising consistency to the point of barley surviving, this is one of the main reasons right there. It costs $500 for the best model and the only reason to me has to do with Blu-Ray due to it being a new technology. With TVs and cable networks going HD, this was the next step in creating a new generation DVD.
Arrogance: This is something that could have played a small factor in what has hindered Sony. After winning in the previous round with the PlayStation 2 in such a convincing fashion, you would think that it could easily blow everyone out of the sky but it hasn't happened yet and I doubt that's going to happen.
Lack of Exclusives: When there really aren't many games that are out for that system alone, are you going to buy it easily? Look at something like Grand Theft Auto, which is also on the Xbox 360. I know Sony has a few and off the top of my head I can think of Resistance, Metal Gear Solid 4 (I believe is exclusive) and soon to be Final Fantasy 13. There probably are others but to be honest I'm not 100% certain. This is a big problem for the PlayStation 3 and convincing people to buy it for games.
Marketing: What exactly is the PlayStation 3, a gaming console or a Blu-Ray player that just happens to play games? If you are expecting to play games, then this may not be for you based on price and look above how about the games just on that system alone. If you're looking for a Blu-Ray player, this might actually work for you so in essence it's difficult to figure out who exactly is this intended for.
Vista Comparison: Ok, maybe not so much but can you honestly see a link between Windows Vista and the PlayStation 3? The expectations were very high going into this generation of gaming and so far have failed miserably. The PlayStation 2 would be like Windows XP, the one people will take and would rather have instead of spending now $500 to get to the next level of gaming. The main difference is that the PlayStation 2 is still having games being made for it probably because of this system being a disappointment.
I know it's said about the games are coming but when? How much longer do people have to wait? If you're going to buy a gaming system, you'd want games right? Well, that's what is going to be needed with Sony if they honestly expect to compete in the gaming market. If you have a PlayStation 3 or are intending to buy it, fill free but make sure you get your moneys worth because if you don't, you're going to be wasting a big chunk of change.
Is this about whether to buy the PlayStation 3 or not? Not really as it is just an analysis on why it's so easy to pick on the PS3. I don't think this will knock Sony out of the video game market but probably cause them to rethink their strategy when they decide to go into building the next console being the PlayStation 4.
