Three Best Playstation Three Games of 2008

The three best Sony Playstation three Games of 2008, all in one article.

I love gaming, and always have. Anyone who has read my previous articles, such as Halo: Overrated?, 3 Great Sports Games for the Playstation 3 or 3 Most Overrated Playstation 3 games of 2008 will know that. It is also evident in my photography, in pictures such as My Playstation 3 Game Collection. Why I love gaming so much, I've never been entirely sure, but over the years it has become a major part of my life. As this has happened, it has also influenced my writing. As such, I thought I'd write yet another gaming related article, and here is what I came up with. Hopefully you'll enjoy reading it as I much as I enjoy writing it.

Call of Duty: World at War

Much has been made of Call of Duty: World at War. Before it was ever released, people were complaining for 3 main reasons.
1) The game is being made by Treyarch, the team behind the much maligned Call of Duty 3.
2) The game is set in World War II, not in a more modern setting.
3) The game would never possibly be able to top Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
In my view, Treyarch have produced one of the finest FPS games of all time. The game might not have as riveting a storyline as its predecessor, but that's to be expected considering it has to follow history and it can't have a completely unpredictable storyline. While the campaign was below the standard set by Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4, the same can not be said for online play, or for the brand new co-operative mode. The online play is largely the same as Call of Duty 4's, but it has brand new maps and the perks are very well received. The addition of vehicles is also extremely addictive when playing the game online. The co-operative mode adds unforetold replayability to the game, and means the game has truly become a multiplayer game that players can play with their friends.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto IV developed on the massive success of both Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. In the form of Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar Games produced one of the greatest games ever the grace console systems. The storyline behind the gameplay was phenomenal, the introduction of online was glorious and the world of Liberty City was superb. The game is one of the highest rated games of all time, and it truly deserves all of its praise. In terms of gaming, this game could be the closest game to perfection yet. What Rockstar Games plans to do in its next installment should be very, very interesting.

Resistance 2

The only Playstation 3 exclusive on this list, Resistance 2 hasn't even been released in Europe or Japan yet. This game is a follow up to the vastly successful and popular Resistance: Fall of Man, and pits players against the Chimera once again. The difference: this time the battle is in America, and it has gotten a whole lot bigger. Insomniac Games had a big challenge on their hands to top the original Resistance, but so far it seems that people feel they've achieved what they set out to do. Boss battles, a rarity in FPS games, add a whole new dimension to the game, and makes the war that is going on seem even more epic. Combine that with 60 player online, which is epic in itself, and you've got the recipy for one hell of a game. Throw in 8 player online co-op missions, and you have a game challenging for the mantle of best ever FPS game. Only the coming weeks and months will reveal just how great this game is, but it's already clear that it should be one of the best games of next-generation gaming, not just 2008.

Honourable Mentions: I figured that I should also give some honourable mentions here to games that have been really impressive, but have just missed out on this list. The following 3 games have all earned special distinction in gaming for the year 2008:

  • Far Cry 2
  • Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
  • LittleBigPlanet

Remember, if you think a game should be here that isn't, please feel free to place your suggestions below in  the comments. If you've enjoyed this article, I'd also appreciate a comment. Thank you, and feel free to spread the word about this article!
