I don't think Guitar Hero helps you play a real guitar at all. I own Guitar Hero 2, and i can beat all the songs on expert. But i am terrible at playing a real guitar. On the other hand, i have a friend that has a real guitar and he is very good at it. If you give him guitar hero, he is absolutely terrible.
I think the best thing about guitar hero is that it has created interest in classic guitar rock.
