Philips scores big using background lights on Television-sets and also hopes to score with lightened surroundings at computer games. After a successful introduction of Ambilight, that has made watching television a whole new experience again with the help of lightened surroundings, Philips comes with a set of speakers with lamps, fans and a trembling support for the wrist that has to increase the gaming experience.
The system is based on the technology amBX that Philips also wants to provide under license to other manufacturers of accessories for the computer. The electronics group expects to bring the first systems on the market at the beginning of next year, according to a spokesman last Wednesday. The United States will be the first. The Ambilight-Televisions are a huge success in the U.S.
"With this new system, a gamer will see for example a blue surrounding outside the monitor and feels a cool breeze when the game-character is under water," according to the Philips-informant.
Manufacturers of computer games can program the effects. The American based company THQ, a large manufacturer of games, uses the technology already in the adventure game Broken Sword: The Angel of Death. Philips will show the possibilities of amBX on the coming IFA-Electronics Show in Berlin.
